Wish I’d known I had ADD back then. Part of the problem but doing my best to limit the damage and help when I can. Can tell a hawk from a handsaw in most (many?) environmental conditions.

Sincere question and I hope we can make a safe place for this discussion, are there people out there who feel like they don't know how to get involved and make a difference?

What do you feel like the barriers are for you getting involved in organizing?

Have you tried and failed?

Syllabus help: Looking for an article about eugenics history that can help introduce students (especially upper level undergrads) to the history of eugenics in the 19th-20th c in the US.

It’s for a class where students’ main competencies are mostly not humanities/social sciences.

Suggestions?

If this were a team of humans, liability would be obvious. Because it’s not, and because “safety” is theater (especially in this case), responsibility is intentionally obscured. It’s like stochastic exoneration.
I think the AI angle of this is obscurant. It doesn’t matter that grok is “an AI” whatever you take that to mean. Suppose X hired a team of guys to photoshop the clothes off of women and children whenever anyone asks. That’s functionally identical what happening here. It’s not complicated.
A functional country would shut Grok down permanently. Like, immediately. Right now. Last week. Whatever. Just flip the switch. Obviously.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

In a system structured so heavily around binary political outcomes, when one party is fully arsonist it is exceptionally reasonable for those targeted by reactionary violence to demand allies work on breaking arsonist power, because that becomes the whole of the political project until it is done.

The people yelling at you on the internet also don't know what to do. That's because these problems are much bigger than individual people. You always have to keep that top of mind & act accordingly. Humility is a virtue.

Hey internet: we have hit the Chicken Bone Deficit part of the year (in which we need more chicken stock for recipes than we generate chicken bones to make it with).

What are everyone’s favorite whole chicken recipes?

Presumably roast but we’re not dying on that hill.

I agree with this, and I agree with the reply that says it's kicking the can down the road, BUT I'll also say this:

There's an adherence to Twitter/X in DC circles, which is enabling Big Tech/Musk, etc. by proxy. A lot of boomers in power are clinging onto the idea of Twitter = relevance.
For everyone saying the solution is just to get off Twitter/X—that’s not going to cut it. This problem preceded Grok, it preceded Twitter, it preceded the internet itself. It will outlast the AI boom. It’s a problem of patriarchy, which is reinforced with violence.

You hold a house meeting on calling in the exterminators, half the housemates don't turn up, and the ones who do show agree by a small margin to put the cockroaches in charge instead. This goes predictably well. Now the housemates who didn't turn up are yelling at the exterminators

@apocalypticanow.bsky.social Responding off thread, so as not to derail, but I think that you are going a little too far forensic science and behavioral psych. I think it’s more that prosecutors have overstated their value, and the FBI has been particularly problematic.
