I’m going to say this again. Our judicial system relies on the idea that EVERYONE is entitled to due process.

It doesn’t work if we ignore that.
As someone once pointed out, if non-citizens aren’t afforded due process, _nobody_ gets due process.

All they’ll need to do is claim you aren’t a valid citizen and suddenly you have no due process to argue against that claim.

And they can do it to _anyone_ for any reason.
A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.
I don’t usually share TT links, but this one expresses a point that I feel is very important in a way that resonates with me.

This is what allies do. Now what we need are accomplices.

My parents brought me up on documentaries about the civil rights and women’s rights movements. I watched nightly news about the gay rights movement. It is now time to be part of and see the same activism for trans rights.

We are all equal and deserve to be treated as such.

This is the cruel update that I’ve been expecting to drop since the SCOTUS decision. This will effectively limit the ability for trans individuals to travel internationally. It could well keep many people from being able to flee the country if they had previously been able.
1. The Trump administration has just quietly updated the State Department website to indicate that it may invalidate transgender people's passports.

This comes a week after a SCOTUS ruling blocking lower rulings allowing trans people to update them.

I got a COVID booster because I continue to see “healthy” people lose their health to COVID and don’t want to risk it happening to me
About 1 in 4 American adults got a covid vaccine shot during the 2024-25 virus season, a fraction health care experts warn could be smaller this year as millions wrestle with conflicting advice from the government and trusted medical orgs about the value of a shot. kffhealthnews.org/news/article...

This whole thread is a blazing condemnation of patriarchy.

And at some point our society needs to grow a pair and actually put its actions where its words are.

If we’re going to say that SA is a problem, we need to act to stop SA in all its forms.
This also tracks with my experience of street harassment and physical abuse.

An adult man -- a complete stranger -- photographed me playing on the swing set in the playground after school when I was younger than 10.

When I tried to run away, he started following me until I screamed for a teacher.
I was talking with a friend my age not long ago about how she received the largest amount of male interest from older men when she was ~8 years old to around 19 or so.

At least a couple of them--from church, mind you--said she was "worth the risk with law enforcement". She wasn't safe at church.

What would be news is if the conversation actually changed.

If there were a groundswell of support for survivors of CSA and SA.

If men no longer felt comfortable casually sexualizing children and women.

If abusers were held accountable. Fired. Stopped.

If, for once, change seemed possible.

The man did so much harm to this country by continuing and amplifying Nixon’s policies, but this was something he was unwilling to do. Makes one think about how far we have fallen as a society.

I cannot wrap my head around how cruel and destructive this is.

This is what comes of years of rhetoric demonizing and blaming the unhoused on the part of politicians (including big city Democrats) instead of seeing them as neighbors who need help
This is far worse than anyone expected.

Trump's HUD plan would cut *two-thirds* of permanent housing and push as many as 170,000 formerly homeless people back onto the street—redirecting funds to work mandates, forced treatment, and encampment sweeps.

All as mass internment camps are being built.

NEW: The first two years of Massachusetts' millionaire tax has raised $3 billion more than expected.

And rather than driving the rich away, IPS researchers found that the number of millionaires has *increased.*

listen, with US journalism falling off a cliff i’ve seen multiple people touting the BBC for doing good “actual journalism”

and I need you to know they’ve been horribly transphobic and damaging to trans people for YEARS

and they’re about to get even worse

they are not the answer!
The absolute gall of this. Trans people have been loudly decrying the blatant institutionalized transphobia being pumped out of the BBC offices FOR YEARS, and some staff made up bullshit "memo" sends the entire organization crashing within a week because they aren't transphobic ENOUGH.
“It reflected a “cultural problem across the BBC” which treats issues of gender and sexuality as ‘a celebration of British diversity’ rather than a complex and contentious subject.”

Just a second - what exactly is contentious about sexuality and gender identity?

This is one of the prime examples of older media that handled trans characters better than modern media.

Other good examples include S5E15 of The Love Boat (1982), S4E3 of The Jeffersons (1977), and the multiple appearances of the character Beverly LaSalle on All In The Family (1975-1977).
Joanca is the only trans woman in animated media I've personally seen that is overtly transgender and not in a transmisognistic caricature way, but rather a humanizing way.

from 40 years ago btw.

Expel the yes votes from the party and cut off all their access to fundraising, then remove Schumer from leadership. Anything less is mealy-mouthed coward bullshit.
As this vote moves to the House, I stand with Democratic leadership as they refuse to rubber stamp the full-scale Republican assault on Americans’ health care and I am proud of the majority of Senate Democrats who opposed this vote.

"We have to agree to cancel midterm elections because people need paychecks."

"We have to agree to the camps because people don't have paychecks."

And if that's where we are, the political process is already a lost battle.

That's why Democrats caving is bad.

The model of holding individual senators responsible is broken here. The retirees clearly agreed to take the fall. Which is why the nos should get no credit for voting no unless they move to oust Schumer

We can't vote Schumer out until 2028 but we can make him being the senate majority leader a litmus test for 2026 candidates. Every single Dem senate candidate should be forced to go on the record and state they will not vote for him as majority leader.

Dear @fetterman.senate.gov
I know you aren’t up for reelection, so you don’t care what your constituents think, but you have decided to throw the entire country under the bus to make yourself look like some kind of peacemaker.
And it failed.
This isn’t a win.
This is unconditional surrender.

We joke about the Torment Nexus and all that, but...

The truth is science fiction warned us endlessly not to let fear control us.

"Fear is the mind killer"
"Fear is a path to the Dark Side"
etc.

Silicon Valley claimed to love SF, then built a machine to amplify fear as a means to control people.

Gay marriage has been legal for almost TEN YEARS, and the world hasn't ended. People never tried to marry animals or ban straight marriage. Aside from "it makes me feel icky" or "My Religion says it's gross" (First Amendment means freedom FROM religion too ), there is no argument to overturn.
