“At the time, there was no shortage of members of the Republican Party elite rushing to denounce [him]…with senior veterans of his administration unafraid to unload on him — on the record — with lines like: ‘Yesterday was the worst day for the Republican Party since Lincoln’s assassination…’
it is so important to remember that IN THE MOMENT there was no one who thought jan. 6 was some innocent protest gone awry. everyone recognized it for what it was.
At the time, everyone, including Republicans, understood how bad it was. Then, brick by brick, they built a foundation of lies to justify doing what they know, deep down, to be wrong. Trump betrayed the country. And so do they.

The American media, political, and intellectual establishment quite literally does believe that Trump winning the 2024 election legitimatizes anything he did before that, because to believe otherwise would threaten the sanctity of the American tradition.
Margaret Brennan appears to suggest that Jan 6 insurrectionists should get pardoned by Trump because they're "white collar workers, small business owners" who "didn't necessarily have a criminal record."

Rick Perlstein, in his book 'The Invisible Bridge,' makes the case for this theory quite convincingly. He documents many, many times when Reagan was clearly just making shit up, but also pretty clearly believed what he was saying. People who pointed this out, of course, were scorned and reviled.
"It probably never occurs to [Republican President] that he is lying. He believes his own untruths. He lives in a world of fantasy which becomes for him reality."

That sentence about Ronald Reagan was written in 1990 by George Dunne, a Jesuit priest who'd known Reagan since the 1940s.

Reminder that for the US welfare state, the point is not to relieve poverty but to best manage the specter of destitution as a means of disciplining the bottom rung of labor. Countless academics point out it's cheaper to simply house people but for the super rich, in the long run, it absolutely isnt
In Georgia, a mom facing eviction reached out to DFCS for help. They offered her nothing. Soon the agency took her kids away because of "inadequate housing."

The state then paid *$6,200 a month* to house her kids in foster care.

One of the most important and infuriating stories I read this year:
When Families Need Housing, Georgia Will Pay for Foster Care Rather Than Provide Assistance
In more than 700 cases over five years, Georgia reported inadequate housing as the sole reason for taking a child into foster care, a WABE and ProPublica analysis found. Advocates say it would be chea...

Anyone who served during the height of the GWOT era cannot be surprised that terrorists are spawning out of the ranks whatsoever.
the culprits for both the Vegas and New Orleans attacks were GWOT-era veterans. this is a trend that will continue. we have millions of vets from a quarter century of careless war, a media ecosystem designed to break people's brains and an ever-rising cost-of-living. buckle up

a little late to the commentary on this one, but if you want to understand what's going on here, you have to accept that The Atlantic in its current form is essentially a radicalization project designed to pull liberals to the center right

Apologies to Lily-Rose Depp who for years I've been dismissing as just another nepo-baby with dead eyes (lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll's eyes). Was disappointed to see her cast in David Eggers' NOSFERATU. But it's a remarkable performance. I love being forced to revise my opinion like this.

Final 10 minutes of Nosferatu left me shook.

And also surprisingly moved in a way I did not expect.

Nosferatu is one of the best remakes of a classic film as well as one of favorite films of the year. From the story, writing, directing, cast, characters, cinematography, editing, production costumes, frightening scenes, score, and prosthetic makeup that works out brilliantly. 9/10.

NOSFERATU is exceptionally good. As high as my expectations were, I didn't think that it would body slam me like it did. This is not an exercise in style (though it is stylish), but a movie bursting with emotion as it depicts real people struggling to cope with an overwhelming, omnipresent evil.

In Eggers’ Nosferatu, Ellen’s penultimate confrontation with Orlok is a masterclass in staging & costuming. Her oversized gown accentuates her small size. They’re never captured in the same frame, like dark reflections of each other. Ellen figuratively & literally stands her ground. It’s bliss.

Nosferatu was everything a classic gothic horror should be- which is that it’s way more about torment of the soul and vibes than it is about slashes and jumps.
The plague commentary. The statement that we must see the darkness first to kill it.
Plus gorgeous performances, lighting, sets.

Moderation decisions draw intense public scrutiny from many places. That’s why Bluesky's architecture is designed to enable communities to control their online spaces, independent of the company or its leadership. We will continue to work on empowering people with more control over their experience.

it was going so well
Personally, I think Jesse Singal should be banned from Bluesky for his own protection.
Personally I think it’s a rather bizarre choice, both ethically and from a business perspective, to not only allow notorious harasser Jesse Singal to stay on the site, but to actively protect him in ways that aren’t afforded to more vulnerable users in the process.
