There are credible reports that federal agents may be replaying the 2020 playbook and surging into Portland with the goal of provoking conflict and violence in my hometown. I am in close contact with state and local officials to monitor this activity.

R. F. Kuang’s Babel was, at its heart, a critique of imperialism and 19th-century academia’s role in it.

I’m about a quarter into her new novel, Katabasis, and it is a blistering takedown of academia *today*. Here are reasons people are in the pride section of hell:

Last night in Portland I went to an event where a guy read poems from his second story window at sundown. Last week a crowd gathered to watch birds nest in a chimney. Today there's a big family-friendly picnic and a river cleanup event. By all means, send in the troops to this war torn hellhole

yeah someone here was like "sarah go on tv!! how often does history happen on your doorstep!!" and I counted on my fingers and went "hmmm... like once every two to four years?"
a coup breaking out in South Korea while she's (I assume) visiting family in Seoul for the holidays and specifically at that exact moment very drunk does in fact track perfectly with Sarah Jeong's career tbh lol, this does seem to be the kind of shit that just happens to her
