When I talk about academic blogs that demonstrate the capacity of that form, I lead with @nursingclio.bsky.social. When I think of academics who model the potential of the para-academic pathway, I think of @lmansley.bsky.social. Anyway, read this.
I'm incredibly moved by this piece by @lmansley.bsky.social in AHA's Perspectives on History. I've watched Laura's professional track over the years and I've been proud to be a small part of her journey. Please read and share widely! I also think it's an important piece to share with grad students.

I’ve received some really nice comments and messages about this column, but this is one of the nicest. 🥲

Every 6 weeks, I get an IV medication to treat my autoimmune disorder.
My cost: $20
Insurance pays: $1,328.53
Provider charges: $8,500
Every 6 weeks. That's 8 or 9 times per year.

so, today I got the surgery center where I got my deviated septum fixed to send me an itemized bill so I could submit to my FSA for reimbursement
my out of pocket cost: $473
what my insurance paid: $4258
what they tried to charge my insurance (not a misprint): $173692

I was at an event yesterday where Rand Paul spoke via video and talked about how great it was to send ACA money "directly to the people" so that they could work collectively to get better deals on health care.

And these limited ACA benefits don't do anything when the premiums are going up, like mine, by thousands of dollars. Keeping the subsidies is literally the bare minimum they can do since they won't actually attempt to regulate the health insurance industry.
The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.
The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.
People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.
And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

Fun fact: Kaine doesn’t have voicemail at his DC office on weekends or evenings. Tried to call earlier and couldn’t even leave a message.
Deal has been reached, I’m told by multiple sources, and Kaine has announced his support

i want to repeat this: mamdani and spanberger have run similar campaigns tailored to their respective electorates and it is maddening to watch political journalists attempt to create some broad contrast where none exist
the other thing about this is that there is no reason to pit these candidates against each other? each are good fits for their respective electorates and each shows the value of vigorous campaigns focused on the stated material problems of voters.
