No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I'm in my hometown, where I haven't been (except Christmas) since my sister died in the fall. This is the beauty of a hometown. People know. I'm out and about and people see me and say, 'I'm sorry.' Dudes I barely know walk by me, pat me on the shoulder and say, 'I'm so sorry.'

Home. It's nice.

People often disparage the press — and we often get it wrong — but almost everything you know about this administration is not because pundits go on tv or social media and pontificate but because of relentless reporting from real journalists at institutions that give them resources to do so.

The day I lost my shit most at work was when my newspaper eliminated the edition of our paper that got sports into the paper that went to Iowa City, home of the Iowa Hawkeyes. No big deal, an editor said, “People read us for our political coverage.” I was a well-behaved ideal employee, but …

- the government is covering up evidence the president is a pedophile
- he’s openly taking bribes from foreign governments
- his masked agents are shooting citizens in the streets
- the FBI is helping him steal the election
- he’s threatening war against multiple allies

You might think sports isn’t as important as other parts of the paper, but the WaPo covers sports like news — sports betting, political lobbying by leagues, accountability journalism even for local owners like Dan Snyder. No wonder the moneyed class didn’t like WaPo sports.

sports coverage is not about box scores anymore. it's about power and politics and corruption and sovereign wealth and real estate and the use of taxpayer money and the most publicized labor disputes in the country and yes, sometimes about ball go in hoop
