Hi everyone—I'm a #DemocracyResearcher, & I'm deeply concerned about where we're headed. The challenges to democracy we’re facing right now aren’t just sobering; they're alarming. This affects all of us— not least in Europe —now’s the time to stay vigilant & engaged.
Democracy doesn’t die in darkness; it dies in plain sight, with everyone watching—and some even cheering. For many, democracy has become a floating signifier, losing its importance and meaning. #USElection2024

Response by the Danish Ambassador to the US

“We are close allies and should continue to work together as such … And yes, we expect full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”

EU citizens - especially those in Greenland - deserve a clear answer to the question of how EU leaders would react to attempts of the US to annex Greenland. Will there be a clear political and economic response? Or is it also going to be a "complex situation" to be "closely monitored"?

Official reactions by EU representatives & institutions to the US kidnapping of a foreign leader and their spouse are frankly dismaying. They point to a troubling loss of clarity about what the European Union claims to stand for. 1/4
Venezuela será libre.

People in Venezuela deserve to live free after years of oppression.

As the European Parliament has consistently affirmed, we do not consider Nicolás Maduro to be the legitimate, elected leader of Venezuela.

Oh ok, we the EU are just total US lapdogs now.

Russia doesn't consider the Ukrainian government to be legitimate since Maidan either btw, is the EU about to tell us that the 2022 plan to capture Kyiv + Zelenskyy was actually perfectly acceptable? What clownery.

I’m at Times Square, where an emergency “No War On Venezuela” protest just took to the street. Easily a thousand people here in real-feel 20°F weather.

“No more coups, no more wars, Venezuela’s not yours!”

“No boots on the ground no bombs in the air, U.S. out of everywhere!”

Oil, conflict, and climate change – there is a direct connection.
The real kicker here is that if US companies do succeed in ramping up Venezuela’s oil, it’s some of the dirtiest and most carbon intensive in the world. And it’s cheap to produce (PdVSA says $5/barrel, probably closer to $25).

This image, purporting to show the US military arresting Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, is AI-generated.

According to Google's SynthID detector, it was created using Google AI.

Every day now is the moment when Europe decides whether international law is worth anything to us, or whether we prefer living in a world where the strong do as they like. And it seems we still don’t know our answer to this question 🤷‍♂️
I have spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and our Ambassador in Caracas. The EU is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela.

The EU has repeatedly stated that Mr Maduro lacks legitimacy and has defended a peaceful transition. (1/2)

Weak. Very weak. Nothing short of a "let them cook" statement.

More than ever, we need a strong EU and esp. European Commission that stands up for its core values. This is not it.

Trump doesn’t appear to have any congressional approval for a declaration of war, and doesn’t seem to have notified the Gang of Eight about any of this.

Before we talk international law, there seems to be some *extreme* disregard for US law here, too.
Rules-based international order has had a rough couple of decades, but this pretty much ends it entirely. Both the strikes and the capture of Maduro are also blatant violations of US domestic law too, of course.

The joke here is that Putin made considerable effort to provide some (flimsy and entirely wrong) veneer of legality for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
I think this feels particularly shocking because no matter how much you stretch the law this has absolutely no basis of legality whatsoever. No terrorists, no "threat" requiring anticipatory self defence. Nothing.

Maduro is a brutal and oppressive dictator of Venezuela.

Trump has no legitimate legal basis for military action against Venezuela under United States or international law.

Both of those facts are simultaneously true.
