Tbh I think all the "What if Russia is emboldened!" is silly. Russia points to Yugoslavia and Iraq already anyway. Plus they already tried and failed at a similar-ish aim in 2022.

The joke here is that Putin made considerable effort to provide some (flimsy and entirely wrong) veneer of legality for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
I think this feels particularly shocking because no matter how much you stretch the law this has absolutely no basis of legality whatsoever. No terrorists, no "threat" requiring anticipatory self defence. Nothing.
