A necessary step towards making it even is stopping assuming that our adversaries are bumbling fools who step on rakes as soon as they move. They’re not. January 6, Brexit, the judicial coup that stole the US Supreme Court for a generation are not the feats of lucky fools.

I think what these 👇 considerations all point to — and by now it is blatantly clear:

Trump‘s interest in Greenland has nothing to do with national security. It’s just the public sugar-coating of other conscious or subconscious motivations, and this should make everyone very concerned.
What is just crazy about this, aside from the need for this statement at all, is that Greenland already IS in the US sphere of influence. It's far cheaper for the US, in material, security, and reputational terms, to have Denmark continue administering Greenland and work within NATO on security.

Question is just whether this opportunistic imperialism will become more systematic over time.
The US attack on Venezuela was the most revealing piece to date in the puzzle that has been Trump’s second-term foreign policy, demonstrating that opportunistic imperialism, rather than isolationism, is the prism through which the Trump doctrine is best understood.

What in the world do they have to say or do that the American people will be on the streets in 7 or 8 digit numbers every day? Do you seriously think you can still fix all this by the midterms?
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO

T: So force is on the table?

M: Nobody is gonna fight the US militarily over future of Greenland

This was 💯 Putin‘s reasoning when invading Crimea, Donbas and the whole of Ukraine — just here coming from the White House with regard to annexing Greenland.

More astonishing public comments from Danish PM on Greenland: “I believe one should take the American president seriously when he says that he wants Greenland. But I will also make it clear that if the US chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including NATO..."
Denmark Says US Attack on Greenland Would Mean End of NATO
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if Donald Trump were to attack the Danish island of Greenland that would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

It’s afternoon pretty much all over Europe right now and I don’t think the reaction by European leaders to Trump’s Greenland fantasies provides any hope so far.

Have I missed something? If we do not publicly commit to our European allies, nobody will believe that we will actually stand by them.
Litmus test for Europe today. Depending on whether and when Merz, Macron, Starmer & others will support this statement by Frederiksen, there may or may not be some hope left.
It's wild that the PM of a NATO member feels compelled to put out a statement like this vis-à-vis the US government.

Bingo. And this is why the „solutions“ to this crisis won’t work.
A year ago, I went to Copenhagen to write about the political crisis sparked by Trump over Greenland. Danes told me that the US can already do whatever it wants on the island.
Their conclusion: Trump just wants the U.S. to look larger on a map

That’s basically a literal Trump-type „20 days or two months“ ultimatum for Denmark and the EU to hand over Greenland.
Trump: We need Greenland. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships.

Reporter: What would the justification be for a claim to Greenland?

Trump: The EU needs us to have it.

The 3rd of January 2026 will go down in history as a seminal moment - the death of the international order that has held the world together for 80 years.

Through their cowardice, our European leaders were willing accomplices in its destruction. We should never forget that.
International law died yesterday. And Europe helped kill it.
Macron, Starmer and Meloni gave their stamp of approval to Trump's illegal invasion of Venezuela to run the country and take its oil. Who can take them seriously now on Russia's invasion of Ukraine?

The EU will be observing the situation…
„During our call, Trump reaffirmed to me that Venezuela may not be the last country subject to American intervention. ‚We do need Greenland, absolutely,‘ he said.“
EXCLUSIVE: In an interview with Michael Scherer, Donald Trump threatened Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, with a fate worse than Maduro’s; defended regime change in the country; and expressed renewed interest in the U.S. seizing Greenland.
