More astonishing public comments from Danish PM on Greenland: “I believe one should take the American president seriously when he says that he wants Greenland. But I will also make it clear that if the US chooses to attack another NATO country militarily, then everything stops, including NATO..."
Denmark Says US Attack on Greenland Would Mean End of NATO
Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that if Donald Trump were to attack the Danish island of Greenland that would mean the end of the NATO alliance.

It’s afternoon pretty much all over Europe right now and I don’t think the reaction by European leaders to Trump’s Greenland fantasies provides any hope so far.

Have I missed something? If we do not publicly commit to our European allies, nobody will believe that we will actually stand by them.
Litmus test for Europe today. Depending on whether and when Merz, Macron, Starmer & others will support this statement by Frederiksen, there may or may not be some hope left.
It's wild that the PM of a NATO member feels compelled to put out a statement like this vis-à-vis the US government.

Bingo. And this is why the „solutions“ to this crisis won’t work.
A year ago, I went to Copenhagen to write about the political crisis sparked by Trump over Greenland. Danes told me that the US can already do whatever it wants on the island.
Their conclusion: Trump just wants the U.S. to look larger on a map

And please a big hands-up 🙌🏻 this morning for anyone in Europe who *still* believes in NATO article 5, transatlantic partnership, or that Trump can be trusted a second on Ukraine.

That’s basically a literal Trump-type „20 days or two months“ ultimatum for Denmark and the EU to hand over Greenland.
Trump: We need Greenland. Right now, Greenland is covered with Russian and Chinese ships.

Reporter: What would the justification be for a claim to Greenland?

Trump: The EU needs us to have it.

I am just a friend, standing in front of the American people, and telling them that external aggression usually goes hand in hand with internal repression.

If U.S. citizens and civil society are not upping their game in the next minute, there is no coming back from this.

Don’t just watch, show full resistance now. Tomorrow will be too late.

The 3rd of January 2026 will go down in history as a seminal moment - the death of the international order that has held the world together for 80 years.

Through their cowardice, our European leaders were willing accomplices in its destruction. We should never forget that.
International law died yesterday. And Europe helped kill it.
Macron, Starmer and Meloni gave their stamp of approval to Trump's illegal invasion of Venezuela to run the country and take its oil. Who can take them seriously now on Russia's invasion of Ukraine?

Kyiv in darkness. Blackouts in most districts, the city is in darkness from the Russian strikes.

Emergency and planned power outages have been introduced. Many shops, pharmacies work from generators

Russia terrorizes millions of people.

The EU will be observing the situation…
„During our call, Trump reaffirmed to me that Venezuela may not be the last country subject to American intervention. ‚We do need Greenland, absolutely,‘ he said.“
EXCLUSIVE: In an interview with Michael Scherer, Donald Trump threatened Venezuela’s interim leader, Delcy Rodríguez, with a fate worse than Maduro’s; defended regime change in the country; and expressed renewed interest in the U.S. seizing Greenland.

Historic injustice/irony: George W. Bush was accused by Europeans of going to war for oil (foolishly, he was actually in it for a more democratic "New Middle East").

Trump actually SAYS he wants Venezuela's oil, but now Europeans say they need more facts to form an opinion.

Not only have our European leaders refused to condemn Trump's illegal invasion of Venezuela and his plan to run it and take its oil, several (including Starmer, Macron & Meloni) seemed to give the invasion their stamp of approval.

A shameful day for Europe.
A day that will live in infamy
The US has today bombed and invaded a sovereign country to execute regime change. European leaders are too terrified of Trump to condemn it. Will they react the same if the US invades Greenland?

I had forgotten this, but it is consistent with Trump's efforts to pressure Zelenskyy into dangerous concessions to Putin. It should be (yet another) alarm signal to European leaders - Trump's goals in Ukraine may be the opposite of Europe's.
During Fiona Hill's testimony to Congress on Oct 14, 2019, she described how Trump and Putin discussed exchanging Ukraine for Venezuela. The quid pro quo was if Trump refuses to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion, Putin would not help Venezuela (a Russian ally) resist a US takeover.

A reminder: it doesn't have to be this way.

Mexico has a hell of a lot more to lose than Europe by angering Trump. Yet this is the response of its president just now.

This isn't a global phenomenon. Why have Europeans proven to be so uniquely cowardly over the past year?

My feeling tonight from reactions by friends & family: anti-Americanism will reemerge as an electoral platform in (some) European democracies. While mainstream elites fear its consequences, incentives are growing by the day. Soon, we might see big mainstream parties advocating to break with the U.S.
