Finally, while I tend to believe it, I am wondering what evidence we have for this 👇

Didn’t I hear „The U.S will remain on board“ … and other bla bla over the weekend?

Good luck 🍀 genuinely to European leaders today, when meeting with US admin. But please also face reality and finally defend a free Europe! Amen. 🙏

German chancellor Merz speaks of Israel doing the „dirty work“ and that he has „full respect“ for what they are doing.

Yet another case in point that this chancellor does not understand or (more likely) care about international law AT ALL.

How many of the G7 leaders still do? 😣

#Wienwahl an einer Bushaltestelle in Brigittenau. Nepp ist hier — mindestens gefühlt — nach Plakatanzahl vorne, ob auch nach Stimmen, wissen wir heute Nachmittag 😉.

Sorry, but this 👇 graph is just so incredibly depressing. I cannot take anything more today, I am just giving up all hope in humanity & civilization.

Will be back with better thoughts tomorrow, sure…

Women who identify with a female MP demand more pluralist justification from them (cp. to those identifying with male MP) & female MPs talk more pluralist than male MPs. Women who identify with a female MP do not expect more responsiveness, and female MPs are not more responsive than male MPs. 14/17

Examples include anti-immigrant campaign posters by 🇦🇹 FPÖ party, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez talking about her role as descriptive representative of women after experiencing sexism, MEP Terry Reintke engaging in surrogate representation of citizens abroad, or the 🇬🇧 Conservatives' Brexit rebels. 9/17

Drawing on Michael Saward, we argue that in an interactive-constructivist understanding of representation as a two-way relationship, citizens' evaluation of politicians' communicative acts is central to assessing representation's quality, for its reveals representation's democratic legitimacy. 7/17
February 25, 2025 at 6:41 AM
In section 3, we first discuss the notion of representation as a communicative (speech or non-speech) act using examples - incl. a famous campaign line of Joe Biden & an image of Jacinda Ardern's visit of the Muslim community at Christchurch. We also consider citizens' evaluations of such acts. 6/17
February 25, 2025 at 6:41 AM
Instead, we argue for an "interactive-constructivist" ontology in which representation is constituted through communicative acts (claim-making by politicians & citizens' reactions) & institutions are neither necessary nor sufficient for representation but provide a background for the practice. 5/17
February 25, 2025 at 6:41 AM
What other aspects of representation deserve our focus (beyond substantive & descriptive)? To start, we provide a definition of representation👇 focusing on politicians' communicative acts & their evaluations by citizens. It conceives representation relationally & decouples it from elections. 3/17
February 25, 2025 at 6:41 AM
In the introduction, we argue that the crisis of representation proclaimed by many political scientists is not *replicated* in how citizens in democracies evaluate their relationship with politicians. Trust in politicians & perceptions of promissory representation are not in general decline. 1/17

To allow more public debt for defense purposes, the pivotal socialist Linke party that could give them the majority for constitutional change strongly opposes armament, is against more weapons to 🇺🇦 & against any nuclear participation. It’s hard to think of compromise that would be acceptable… 7/8

What could success of Die Linke mean for security policy? Key points from their manifesto👇:

- Disarm 🇩🇪🇪🇺

- Build security architecture with 🇨🇳🇮🇳🇷🇺

- End 🇩🇪 military missions

- 🇩🇪 Military should be uncapable of attack

- No 🇩🇪🇪🇺 nuclear weapons/participation

- Fewer weapons for 🇺🇦, negotiations instead

My version of many German voters today
February 23, 2025 at 8:27 AM
Germany 🇩🇪 goes to the polls 🗳️ today. Perhaps the single most important thing for Europe to watch tonight: will AfD & Linke pick up 1/3 of the seats, enabling them to block constitutional reform. Dreams of bold steps in EU integration needed to respond to 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🇷🇺, esp. on defense, may get shattered.

The thing is: even if Trump tomorrow says he wants to defend 🇺🇦, loves Zelensky & honors NATO article 5 — nothing of this would be credible anymore. International institutions are only as strong as common belief in them. With this 🇺🇸 president there is no going back. It‘s over as long as he is there.
