Mac Resolve users can now finally be rid of Rec.709-A and all the confusion it breeds:

(Though not because Apple fixed their nonsense. It’s that Resolve is now managing it with less manual effort.)

After explaining multiple times why the edit should contain only camera original media before kicking out the XML for color, what does the editor do?

Tells me he plans to intentionally put shit in the timeline that was baked out, cut up, exported again and re-imported. Instead of media managing.

I’ve not yet found any documentation on the “Apple Log 2” that was announced with the iPhone 17.

But poking at Resolve 20.2 revealed:

1. Apple Log 2 appears to use the same transfer function as Apple Log.

2. Apple Log 2 primaries are wider virtual primaries, rather than the Rec.2020 of Apple Log.

ProResRAW has been added to Resolve.

As is typical of Apple’s overzealous drive to simplify, the controls are hobbled and yield unexpected results.

And I see some wild (bad) advice floating around online.

I’d be wary and run your own careful tests before painting yourself into a corner with it.

Hell yeah we do!
We need cheap rent so idiosyncratic weirdos can make a living pursuing their passions.
Call it Anti-Industrial Policy: we need is a suite of policies to nudge Americans to own and operate more little public-facing businesses. Speciality shops. Six-seater bars. Esoteric services. Restaurants serving two or three dishes. It would lower overall productivity and increase quality of life.

Microsoft spent $26 billion on LinkedIn.

And over 40 billion on “AI” so far.

Yet somehow LinkedIn still assumes I color hair rather than film/video.

But please tell me again how AI is gonna help me run my business.

This is embarrassingly too accurate.
me: I should really respond to this message.

🧠: nope, it’s too late. now you’ll have to apologize, make up some excuse, blah blah blah…

me: but…

🧠: trust me. much better to just ignore the message, sabotage the relationship, and feel bad about it for the rest of time.

OK. I think I have got OTIO -> RPP working. Seems to be best format to get audio out of Davinci Resolve now. OTIO has some big advantages over AAF & XML.

It’s interesting how the HDR grade of the series Yellowjackets has changed significantly between season 1 and season 3.

The brightest highlights in Season 1 were sharp and distracting vs Season 3 where they’re relatively softer and reduced, resulting in a better look.

Stupid LLM text summarization of email is bad for communication.

I was contacted about a quick grade. I replied that I’m busy and to check in on Wednesday to see if I’ll have time later this week.

Apple (un)Intelligence summarized that as me agreeing to do the grade on Wednesday.

We’re so fucked.

Keep an archived copy handy of every DCTL version you ever use in a grade.

Future you will thank past you.

Resolve does not save them with its libraries nor in exported/archived projects.

I'm sure it'll achieve whatever WB is hoping from it, but it's so frustrating to see this stuff knowing how many good and original ideas are out there struggling to find funding that's almost certainly a fraction of whatever this cost.

Anora, this year’s best picture Oscar winning film, was color graded by Alastor Arnold!

He was the featured colorist in a short doc series about color in movies that I really enjoyed making for Portrait Displays.

Check it out to learn about his approach to color grading:

To see why uploading BT.1886 to YouTube is problematic

On any Mac display, load the Severance trailer on YouTube in Safari, choose a frame and compare directly against the same frame from the episode in the TV app

Now adjust display brightness and note how differently the image responds in each

The show was shot and mastered on video in 4:3. The version on Netflix is cropped to 16:9, and has significant ML sharpening and odd softening. The show looks both over-crisp and gauzy/dreamy.
