AI should be "useful, private and optional," contends DuckDuckGo founder @yegg13.bsky.social.

It's one reason @shiraovide.bsky.social declares the privacy-focused search engine "the best technology company of 2025" in her year-end column: www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2...

Simply amazing how bad this is. A paid professional designed this and an even higher paid engineer approved it.
Yes, the city needs to actually repave streets. Yes, the city needs to repair sidewalks. Yes, the city needs to install curb ramps.

But the bigger problem is that when LA decides to do anything at all to "help" pedestrians, the result looks like this complete and utter bullshit

Batman (on the subject of Burton, would even entertain “Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure”)
Robocop
Born on the Fourth of July
The Wizard
Above the Law (an 80s script executed with 90s means)

Verhoeven and Burton though are signal filmmakers, everything they do after a certain point is simply not of the 80s.
Hard mode: are there any 80’s movies that feel like a 90’s film

We are in a Post-Customer world now. Having the money to buy something is no longer good enough, now corporations can simply decide: nah you’re just not good enough for our shareholders

If you have memories of the 1970s and lived to see the iPhone that’s just an incredible amount of (apparent*} technological progress and it seems to be really hard for people, but this cohort especially, to imagine it won’t just go on like this forever.
had a whole conversation with an otherwise smart guy in his 50s-60s where every answer to “but ai can’t do that” was “…yet” and I’m stating to think like half the problem with the ai boom is that our brains can’t distinguish computers from magic
"they will be, one day"

no, they won't, any more than tires can help you fly. They're not built for that. They're a fundamentally different technology. An LLM does not exist to model conscious thought, it exists to take advantage of your willingness to see faces in things that aren't there.

I was not prepared for how arresting this disc was. A city I live in that somehow does not exist any more. From Coney Island at dawn to black churches on a holy day. It's a frozen slice of a time that you can never return to.

[Kurt Vonnegut voice] Aha! A player piano! Just as depicted in my novel “Don’t Create the Player Piano”!
Scientists have developed a robotic hand exoskeleton that can passively train expert pianists to play faster keystrokes and overcome the ceiling effect in motor skills.
