I’d like someone to demonstrate that we can consistently build apartment buildings before we turn our attention to solar system scale engineering problems, frankly.

(Ms. Stronach is if anything being generous about the timeline.)
for some reason all the techbros have been talking about building Dyson Spheres all of a sudden and to be clear: we are so comedically far from being able to build a dyson sphere that they may as well be promising magic. we are MILLENIA away from building dyson spheres

"Abolish the Police and then what?" while infantile and often asked in bad faith, is at least, on some levels, a real question

"Ablish ICE and then what?" Is not a real question. Clearly if ICE didn't exist tomorrow society would just objectively be more peaceful and would not in any way fall apart

Some years ago, I was chatting with a Retropolis reader, a young history student, and I mentioned there were several dozen people enslaved in New Jersey up until the day the 13th Amendment kicked in in December 1865.

Y’all. He identified every one of them.

see also: Neil deGrasse Tyson. no matter how many times I post or make videos about the women who came forward about his behavior, tons of people are always hearing about it for the first time. it’s not even an “open secret” in scicomm because it’s not a secret!
A tough one to sit with--but we must--is that some people's ability to make good art in part derived from, or was protected by, the fact that they were enabling or doing terrible things. See also: We Need to Talk about Cosby doc. Even more troubling on this score: Read deep reporting on Alice Munro
"actually his stuff was very Derivative and not Original" like, you don't have to do this. it is good for us all to sit with the cognitive dissonance that a very bad person can make very good art. it is good for us to work through the moral ramifications of that.

YA fiction has had its time to shine, now is the time for 42 year old fiction, middle adult fiction, where all the plots and romance involve cheese and heartburn and back pain. The climax of each novel is finding a really nice sandwich, or finally figuring out where that thing went.

When I get home, it will be time to pick up the 196 stitches, provisionally cast on, and then graft together. Then elastic. Then sew the waistband down.

Sydney's queer community has a rich history, and the Mardi Gras protest (originally), then parade -- followed by the big Mardi Gras party -- was very central to all of that.

If you're in town, go check out Qtopia - the queer museum for a lot of the history too. Recommended.
Being #PrideMonth, yesterday I visited Qtopia: a museum
dedicated to queer history and culture here in Sydney.

It’s the largest queer museum in the world and on the site of the arrests of the first Mardi Gras in 1978, incl. the cells our elders were held in.

Was both sobering and fab!

Still thinking about this young hero.

Not just the physical challenges to swim for hours to find help, but the psychological fear to having left your family behind in open waters and carrying the weight of being their only hope of survival.

This really deserves a lot of recognition.
