ARCUS was important. It jumpstarted careers in science. It amplified voices that have too long been left out of research. It did all that and more for very little money, and now it's gone, arguably when we need it most.

thinking about how, in the Russian history elective I took in HS, every time a tsar was facing domestic weakness the teacher would turn to the assembled students and ask "so what is it time for?" and we would chant "stunning territorial annexation!" and she would respond "well, DUH, girls"

When people argue that renewable energy sources are too expensive, remember that we don’t invade countries to seize wind farms and there are no solar cartels. Fossil fuels have enormous geopolitical, public health, and climate externalities.

It's just one nest, but if you follow vultures for long, you learn to take any win you can get. An Egyptian Vulture nest has been observed successfully raising three chicks, something very rare in this endangered species.

In 2026, I'm going to speak and work against LLMs in any way I can, against their use and spread and acceptance. I almost wish I could say I would use them less myself, but I will use them the exact same amount of times I did in 2025: Zero.

I'm happy to see Cape Vultures as one of five 2025 "road to recovery" stories at @mongabay.com today. As always, the story is complicated, but things are looking up, and their reporting on vulture conservation throughout the year has been great:

Road to recovery: Five stories of species staging a comeback
Amid accelerating biodiversity loss and shrinking ecological spaces, it’s easy to lose hope. But every year, there are stories of optimism: of species that are making a comeback after being nearly wip...

I published more and made more of my income with journalism than ever before. I grew more garlic than I've ever grown, and had my first real crop of potatoes. I looked at a lot of birds.
Quote this with what you have accomplished in 2025, no matter how big or small
Reading & writing has kept me alive this year.

Somehow, it’s been my most productive year as an author.

Here’s a guide to what I’ve published in 2025, in case you’ve lost track.

Remember when there was all that ~pivoting to video~
Remember when people thought the iPad would replace all print newspapers
Like print still has a role and demand in our current time despite repeated predictions of its death, I am laying down a marker that microblogging will have a comeback in the coming years

I love this bearded vulture embroidery on Reddit. The artist nails the beard, the fabulosity of the collar, and the general vibe of the magnificent lammergeier.

(Bonus points for the background looking quite a bit like PDX carpet.)

Imagine what this Eagles team could do if we played offense for more than two quarters a game. Still, great win in the toughest road game there is. Best defense in football and it's not close. #GoBirds

I’m just going to say this (not diving back into an argument or attacking anyone):

The idea that journalists cannot accurately or fully report on topics they have strong feelings about is silly.

Fellow Oregonians: Let's hope for a cloudless sky on March 3, 2026. (Never tell me the odds.)

It’s astounding to me how quickly these nitwits pivoted on a tile from

“AGI will outperform all human intellect within a few years”

…to…

“…but if you think about it, software doesn’t actually have to work, does it?”
Can't wait for the loosened up, non-perfect, but quickly shipped AI-enhanced updates to hit my banking and insurance services next year.

Im sure there will be no issues there at all.

Stop trying to skip the fun parts. Research is a treasure hunt. It can be tedious at times, but when you find the surprise buried in some obscure archive, it's just so much fun. I'd never rob myself of that.
There's Discourse about using genAI for writing research, and I want to add that every time I've done research (reading books, emailing the library, talking directly to experts, etc) I always stumble across something that inspires a new direction or adds depth that wouldn't have been there before.

This is the ballgame for CBS News. Every journalist there now knows that their editorial mission is compromised. They are no longer a press free to report the truth.
Per NY Times’s Michael Grynbaum on X, this is Sharyn Alfonsi’s email to her “60 Minutes” colleagues in full:
