ARCUS was important. It jumpstarted careers in science. It amplified voices that have too long been left out of research. It did all that and more for very little money, and now it's gone, arguably when we need it most.

Hey so if you see your senator in this list, could you please call them tomorrow and tell them that you’re mad because they voted to kill the entire hemp farm industry, including your buddy Derek in Oregon?

Thanks, buddy.

Thanks, NOAA!
In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

My post of Decision Desk's decision to call the Seattle mayor race for Harrell last week didn't hinge on who would ultimately win: The point was that a "call" isn't a race to get a prediction right.

But Wilson now being ahead should at least bring more attention to the importance of not rushing.
Calls are about certainty and not risking people's confidence in the final result. Speeding through for competition is not good and irresponsible.

There are a few teams in the NFL that I like and generally pull for, when they aren't playing my Eagles. The Packers are one of those teams.

That said, tonight they *are* playing my Eagles. May thy knife chip and shatter. Go Birds.

I grow garlic. My neighbors grow squash. I'd like to diversify my own harvest, but for now, trade is just as good. Better, because it also comes with the community value of good barter.

Obergefell survives, and Kim Davis loses. In a time of great and constant harm, every harm averted is something.

That's enough to get me out of bed and started on an otherwise pretty dismal day. Whatever works, grab on to something. Keep going.

I just heard from two different people at #SciWri25 that next year's meeting is ... here? Corvallis?

That is wild. I'm not sure how some details of that will work, but I do look forward to running a makeshift science writer B&B out of my apartment for my out of town friends.

Call your people. To offer, but also to ask. Sometimes the best gift you can give the people who love you is to let them help. (Something I am terrible at, by the way.)
if you want to help and can, I'd start with your network of friends and fam - super local! more ppl than you think likey need assistance with something. let go of the awkwardness and step out of your comfort zone. we’re all gonna need to support each other.

I hate thinking about my own problems when folks are being kidnapped off the street, but ACA subsidy cuts will make my life a lot harder. And that's true for almost every freelancer and creative you follow.

None of this is fucking necessary. It's all a choice, and I will never forgive it.

My most basic electoral opinion remains: Primary everyone. The ones you love, like and hate. Every cycle, but this year especially.

The will of the people is not being represented. Every incumbent should have to convince us they deserve to win their nomination, never assume it.

No, James Watson was not a "complicated" person. He was a bad person, and also a bad scientist. These racist, sexist statements, his sincere beliefs, are both morally indefensible and scientifically absurd. With every year that passes, let his name fade and Rosalind Franklin's shine the brighter.
In case anyone is wondering if Watson was really THAT bad, @lpachter.bsky.social compiled a list of quotes that are absolutely not for the faint of heart.

Cornell is the latest institution to miss the most obvious lesson of 2025: Capitulation to Trump gains you nothing in the long run, and costs you plenty. Anyone still making a deal like this, despite all evidence against its effectiveness, is either cowardly, inept or a willing collaborator.
