If you’re wondering why your friends in academia are a little on edge right now, it’s because an eighteen-year-old who hasn’t done the reading, doesn’t look at the assignment, and has does no critical thinking skills more complex than “because I think it’s in the Bible” can literally end your career

one thing that is important to know is that BIRTH OF A NATION is so racist that people at the *time*, in 1915, were like, “holy shit this is racist”
When the slightest bit of research shows he was consistently racist and a daddy issues Confederate fanboy.

People try to paint BIRTH OF A NATION as a masterpiece with some unfortunate racism. The whole movie is racist, the “masterpiece “ thing was backfilled to excuse it.

"Maybe I'm naive," and proceeds to write the most naive sentence I've ever read. You can't have common interest on improving conditions with another person if the other is racist, because the racist person believe the presupposition that that your conditions shouldn't be improved!
i also believe in building a better world for workers. i also believe that all people are entitled to respect and dignity and that there ought to be social sanction for those who openly degrade others. you call me a “n*gger” to my face and i am not going to smile and shake your hand.

I wrote my entire 100,000 word dissertation in Sublime Text without so much as a grammar checker. I want to emphasize to everyone, everywhere, that you can do amazing things without AI or some machine correcting you! They're nice, I guess, but you're better than them.
I really wanted to write a blog where I imparted sage advice about how to live with the constant suspicion of AI without letting that suspicion erode your soul, but uh... well

The trick is to spend years in grad school learning all this stuff only to turn it off when you hit play because you’re too busy crying that bob from bobs burgers got stuck to a toilet to care about the cinematography.
If you learn about cinematography from YouTube video essays you become worse at watching movies.

This whole media cycle around him has now convinced me Tarantino has bad taste. Not because his top 10 list is bad, but because the way he talks about movies is so weird. He often sounds like someone who hates them???

A concerning development of my lifetime is how little the American populace seems interested in personal virtue. This is particularly true in regards to politics, but pervades most leadership in institutions across the country. The idea of doing the "right thing," per ones moral code, has evaporated
One of my most conservative-coded opinions is that one of the reasons we're in this mess is because of the profound decadence, solipsism, moral rot, and general lack of personal virtue afflicting much of the upper PMC / bourgeoisie.

IQ is a measure of how good you are at IQ tests, which is something informed by how familiar you are with taking academic tests (& thus the quality of your school, which is in part determined by your parents' wealth, etc). there's nothing in particular that makes them a good test of intelligence

i strongly, strongly believe that good writing is downstream of clear thinking and a strong understanding of the subject matter at hand. without fail, tortured writing comes from writers who don’t know and can’t think clearly about anything.
Oh man! This paragraph is brutal. The best thing about this review is it's not trying to be mean. It's just listing how bad the writing is.

This thread is good, though I will say as a instructor who has taught writing for 10 years, attendance, syllabus comprehension, assignment understanding, and ability to engage with material are all within the normal range lately. AI creates headaches for sure, but...
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.

know my opinion is worthless and i'm organizing by tiers:

Great: A New Hope | Empire Strikes Back
Good: Return of the Jedi
Okay: Last Jedi | Force Awakens | Revenge of the Sith
Not good: Phantom Menace | Rogue One
Weird: Attack of the Clones
Bad: Solo
Offensively bad: Rise of Skywalker
Here’s mine, except I don’t consider Star Wars a series of movies anymore.

1. Andor
2. Empire
3. Star Wars
4. Rogue One
5. don’t care
If you want to count Spaceballs I would totally put it at number four of my personal rankings and bump everything else down, but:

1: Star Wars
2: Empire
3: Last Jedi
4: Return of the Jedi
5: Force Awakens
6. Phantom Menace
7: Solo
8: Rogue One
9: Sith
10: Clones
11: Rise of Skywalker

If you look at this chart, especially with the way the numbers are colored and displayed and the percentages attached to them, you can come to the epress conclusion that LGBTQ rights, social programs, DEI, police brutality, etc. are unimportant to voters. Then you read the fine print... (1/X)

i feel so bad for artists who now have to deal with accusations that their work is ai

Its so demeaning to the life of work they put into their art, and it must suck to have to argue that your work is in fact your own.

If you can draw, that's really cool, I think you are great.

It feels like our democracy is less and less "I vote for the leaders who will best solve the problems important to me" and more and more "I vote for the leaders who will enact my policy desires," and that is a complete disaster.

Popularism is a cancer.
Also most voters have just never thought remotely seriously about policy. “Should we get rid of illegal immigrants? Well, of course; they’re illegal!” There’s nothing deeper than that going on until they start seeing what that actually entails.
Some Dems and pundits overread the significance of Trump's win. They looked at dissatisfaction with the border and discerned a seismic cultural reaction to immigration levels inside the country. The former was real. The latter is a mirage.
