It's hard to determine whether the blame lies more with trans advocacy abandoning any and all radicalism while trying to find a palatable message for a cissexist society married to sex-essentialism, or with cis people's inherent discomfort with sex being mutable.

Talia has this special knack for forcing me to completely re-evaluate books I recently read and uncritically loved, considering that I read A Short History of Trans Misogyny right before Trans/Rad/Fem, and read Ain't I a Woman? just a few weeks before seeing this essay.
This was my biggest "Oh my god people don't read" moment while going through the materials for the essay, btw. It's right there in "Ain't I a Woman?" It's been out since 1981. I read Smith's article talking about it and had to go look it up myself. This actually happened.
