"John Goodman on Hume Cronyn's back could outrun this guy!"
Does anyone else have an MST3K line they use regularly, even if it makes no sense out of context?

Because I have both "That'll keep your panfish down for a while." and "Come come, boys, we must confound Jerry at every turn!" from MST3K the movie alone.

We are impoverishing ourselves in a market economy that only rewards wealth extraction, market manipulation, and destructive ai data center construction. When historians like myself argue that the market is a creation of the state, this is what we mean.
"The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that gambling was the second-highest service-sector industry for GDP growth between 2019 and 2024, behind only software publishing."

Jesus Christ.
Very annoyed at the people who decided to open the floodgates to online sports betting, it is absolutely a scourge. Great piece from Gabrielle Gurley on people spending hours a day on these predatory apps.

The public library is an essential component of a 21st-century left political project as an example of both what is already available to us and what can be improved upon in the future. The library is a public good, and it is free as a public service.

I want more people to make the connections.

Perfect example of why unions aren’t just about your own workplace (though they are certainly about that too). Organized labor amplifies the voices that need to be heard.
NEWS: @nationalnurses.bsky.social “demands Congress abolish ICE entirely. We will be doing everything in our power to vote out any elected official who supports funding for this all-out assault on the health, safety, and civil rights of our people.”

Good piece that gets at an often underdiscussed issue -- of how much work in rebuilding state capacity (or denazification of remaining state capacity) will be necessary post-Trump

The Left Needs Bureaucrats - Dissent Magazine
After MAGA, the left will need to be ready with a theory of how to rebuild the federal administrative state—not as it was before Trump, but as something better.

I'm sorry for the person who was beat to death and killed. My sincere condolences to their loved ones. ICE is going to continue to kill people because the purpose of a system is what it does. It is not what it says it does or what you hope it does. Maybe USians will finally confront this truth.

Hollywood focuses on aesthetics first and foremost. Disability representation includes glasses users and if glasses can’t be on-screen there’s little hope for more physically disabled people on-screen.
I’m not suggesting a conspiracy. Or even that people who wear glasses need to see themselves represented on screen

I just think the absence of anyone in contemporary TV and movies wearing glasses is **weird** considering 2/3 of the population needs corrected vision!

This week's newsletter
Why does nobody wear glasses on screen anymore?
People who wear glasses are everywhere in real life. So why isn’t that true on screen?

Not just the rich and that's also something to sit with.
COVID really opened my eyes.

We had two paths ahead of us, and as soon as we took a single step towards THINKING about an equitable world, the rich put their full force into stopping it.

They loath humanity.

Ah, the coffee analogy reminds me of this:
This is a great analysis of why conservatives feel persecuted for others simply existing or being acknowledged.

It’s fear their identity and choices will stop being mainstream or normal. That’s why they get upset at Happy Holidays (acknowledging other celebrations exist) versus Merry Christmas.

1) Contact’s opening day: as the opening cacophony faded to silence, nobody in the packed house made a sound. I was so proud of everyone in attendance.

2) An old lady sat next to @kathyfgibson.bsky.social and me at an otherwise empty showing of Something Borrowed in an incredible dominance display.
Raising the always fun question: What are your most memorable theater-going experiences?

Mine also include The Matrix, Blair Witch, and being way too stoned in Belgium when Fellowship of the Ring was sold out so we sat in the back row for Mulholland Drive instead.
It was hands-down one of the most memorable theater-going experiences I can remember, a collective 30-minute butt-clench/armrest-grab for the final climb. And we knew he lived! Wild.
