No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

If UK news shows are going to give Nigel Farage a platform to spout this absolute boll**** about Brexit & the vaccine rollout (unchallenged) I’ll happily come back every week to correct it.

We cannot allow him & others to rewrite history.

Just blocked someone who'd clearly come here from X for arguing that Grok is just a tool like a pencil and that getting rid of the child abuse image generator might have unintended consequences. Tempted to send his name to the hard drive police.

This reminder should go everywhere, when I’m out I will wade into conversations and criticise Farage/Reform with people who are beguiled by them - I WILL tell them that Reform wants to get rid of the NHS - because if they get into power, we all suffer.
Your regular reminder that Nigel Farage & Reform
wants to dismantle what is left of our NHS
and replace it with a US style privatised healthcare system
where the superrich get healed, the well-off go bankrupt,
and the poor live in agony and die young

Although union membership is higher in the U.K., we see exactly the same pattern. As far as I can see from a bit of perfunctory research, membership was around 50% in 1979 (when Thatcher became PM), and is now less than half that.

What goes through a cat's mind when they see a space about two sizes too small for them to fit in, then get in it, and look very pleased with themselves afterwards?

Welcome! There are a few funny ones but in general it’s a million times better here. I occasionally go back to see what @niallharbison.bsky.social is up to, as he doesn’t put everything on BlueSky, and I see that Twitter has turned into an absolute cesspool.
