I believe one of the most effective things non-caregiver adults can do to prevent teens from getting exploited by extremists & other bad actors online, is to go out of our way to make neighbourhoods safer & more welcome places for kids to exist freely. Even when it is irritating/exasperating for us.
people need to take more responsibility for “we literally made it illegal for teenagers to hang out outside of the house or school”
Imagine bemoaning lower teen drinking? And not discussing the fact we have no third spaces, accepted teen hangout locations or a busted economy? Must be the cats man

But ultimately, when you get into anti-vaxx rhetoric, it's rooted in a belief that a wife and children are a man's exclusive property. And there's a hostility to outside experts like doctors having any authority that undermines that.

We see in the Texas measles outbreak how men....

Entryism is a problem & I worry that the new crop of leftist activists haven't yet developed a proper filter for tankie bullshitters like Cupp, who are a danger to the left.

And now Andy is having a field day using this for his Islamophobic agitprop.

Identifying fascists is a thorough, methodical, and verifiable process.
On Monday, we published this investigation into "Exiles of the Golden Age," a fascist conference in Vancouver this July.

We identified 18 of the 50+ people our photographer captured outside the venue, including small business owners and neo-Nazis.

Here's how we did it. 🧵

Advertised near-exclusively in white nationalist online spaces, promotional social media posts for the event include symbolism popular with neo-Nazis, including the kolovrat sun wheel and a table with...

I can't possibly be shocked that politicians are downplaying the Epstein files when the internet has spent the last 6 yrs turning Epstein into a meme and punchline.

If everyday people trivialize the trafficking and sexual abuse of girls, why the fuck would politicians be any different? C'mon now.

There is no material difference in the rates of loneliness for men and women. We are all suffering!

The difference is that men make their loneliness everyone else's goddamn problem and that includes turning it into anger and violence.

But the solution isn't "stop talking about toxic masculinity"
Half of young Canadian men are at risk of ‘problem anger,’ survey finds
Half of young Canadian men risk letting their anger interfere with their daily life, relationships and work, new research suggests.

Hi Bluesky 👋

Small life update: I’m at the centre of a multimillion dollar lawsuit in Alberta launched by a failed candidate for Jason Kenney’s UCP

It may be the longest and most expensive media trial in Canadian history

I’m ready to go public about it and I want to share more details with you 🧵

Teen Vogue's political work was invaluable. They really put themselves on the map with the mess of 2016 and continued to crank out brilliant stuff.

I only found out a couple weeks ago that it was a team of 1 and now there's no team at all. Jesus Christ, what a bad sign.
I was laid off from Teen Vogue today along with multiple other staffers, and today is my last day.

certainly more to come from me when the dust has settled more, but to my knowledge, after today, there will be no politics staffers at Teen Vogue.

Steve Bannon's "third term plan" is that you become so convinced that Trump will cancel and/or rig all future elections that you disengage from democracy, don't volunteer or donate or run for office, and think your vote doesn't matter so why bother. It only works if you let it work.

The 19th News asked me for some specific advice for parents about how to talk to their kids about their online lives- this is what I told them kids tell me they want:

The Polarization and Extremism Research & Innovation Lab (PERIL) at American University has created resource kits for parents, educators, coaches and faith leaders to help battle radicalization and gender-based bigotry among youth. Cynthia Miller-Idriss (@milleridriss), the founding director at PERIL and the author of “Man Up: The New Misogyny and the Rise of Violent Extremism,” urges caregivers of all kinds to talk to kids about “gendered grievance narratives and propaganda that comes across their phones so they recognize and reject it when they see it.”In today’s ultra-connected world, kids are going to run into rhetoric about gender roles that doesn’t match the values their parents want them to live out in the world. Small comments about gender can lead into a radicalization pipeline, where boys in particular can be swarmed with content blaming women and girls for their personal problems. The best way to prevent misogyny and disrupt the road to violent extremism is to address it head-on with your kids. They’re talking about it — you should, too. Have exploratory conversations about your kid’s life online. If they parrot a specific influencer, ask what appeals to them about that person’s content. If you hear hateful or disrespectful comments, intervene; silence is viewed as acceptance. Make sure they understand how algorithms work to reward outrageous behavior and encourage them to examine whether someone is trying to sell a product or an easy fix to a complicated problem. It’s important to start conversations from a perspective of curiosity, not judgment. Ask your kids what they think about the messages about gender they are receiving from their peers and the internet. Listen to solutions they offer about how to change the attitudes of other young people, or what they think adults should do to address sexism and misogyny. In the words of young people Miller-Idriss has interviewed, “just don’t make it preachy.”✍️: @jazzmyth, data and technology reporter🎨: Sarah Porter for The 19thView all comments

Quick reminder that fascism is almost always obsessed with the aesthetics of the male body—sculpted, uniformed, disciplined.
Hegseth: "It all starts with physical fitness and appearance. If the secretary of war can do regular hard PT, so can every member of our joint force. Frankly, it's tiring to look out at combat formations and see fat troops. Likewise, it's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals."

For the record, half of how Nick Fuentes gets spread around is that he works tirelessly to embody the “Worst person you know just made a great point” meme.

All he needs is for enough people to spread it around and enough people not to know who he is for it to succeed. And it’s going quite well.

This stuff is a step up from the evangelical persecution fetish of imagining that one day they'll be dragged before an emperor to either deny Christ or be thrown to the lions, and it's not an escalation we can afford to tolerate.
