How to make sense of China’s rise? For Phenomenal World I wrote something on its changing role in global finance.
China is not building a dollar-style empire of sprawling markets and speculative finance but something leaner, more functional & tightly managed.

Looking for a long read to go with your coffee this morning? The Line is a project of incredible hubris - we got the story of how it unravelled.
NEW: The End of the Line: the centrepiece of Saudi Arabia’s Neom gigaproject - a 500m tall, 170km long wall-like building intended ultimately to house 9 million people - can’t get out of the ground, say more than 20 former Neom architects, engineers and senior executives.

In this symposium on Syria contributors paint nuanced, grim, but clear-eyed pictures of multiple transitional challenges. Comparisons to other cases and situation in poli sci lit remind us Syria's not terribly unique. Amazingly, they all suggest ways through the obstacles.

Tell me who is going to do the supplying, & I’ll believe you, if you can convince me:

- The ECB/PBOC will replace the Fed as the int’l LOLR
- 🇪🇺/🇨🇳 will tolerate 25% appreciations in the euro/RMB
- 🇪🇺 will complete banking & fiscal union
- 🇨🇳 will remove capital controls
- 🇨🇦🇦🇺🇯🇵🇨🇭 will quadruple in size
Again, this could be a moment when dollar hegemony ebbs, but <demand> for that ≠ <supply> of alternatives, & a 🇨🇳 that is tripling down on export surpluses & a 🇩🇪 that thinks it can just do off-balance sheet defense funding while not changing the rest of its economic model will not be supplying those:
If the world really wants to move away from 🇺🇸 markets/debt/the dollar, it's going to take wholesale changes of 🇩🇪/🇪🇺 & 🇨🇳 economic policies. Fundamental changes. Not just modest things like an off-budget defense fund or some modest movement in the RMB/USD exchange rate. No signs at all of that yet.

Good piece as a “tail risk scenario.” But again, as I’ve tried to point out many times, any argument that 🇺🇸 is going to face a debt crisis & capital flight at debt/GDP ratios 100% lower than 🇯🇵 must answer all kinds of questions about where investors are going to go:
