Update November 22. We’ve updated this article after realising we contributed to a perfect storm of misunderstanding around a recent change in the wording and placement of Gmail’s smart features. The settings themselves aren’t new, but the way Google recently rewrote and surfaced them led a lot of people (including us) to believe Gmail content might be used to train Google’s AI models, and that users were being opted in automatically. After taking a closer look at Google’s documentation and reviewing other reporting, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Gmail does scan email content to power its own “smart features,” such as spam filtering, categorisation, and writing suggestions. But this is part of how Gmail normally works and isn’t the same as training Google’s generative AI models. Google also maintains that these feature settings are opt-in rather than opt-out, although users’ experiences seem to vary depending on when and how the new wording appeared. It’s easy to see where the confusion came from. Google’s updated language around “smart features” is vague, and the term “smart” often implies AI—especially at a time when Gemini is being integrated into other parts of Google’s products. When the new wording started appearing for some users without much explanation, many assumed it signalled a broader shift. We’ve revised this article to reflect what we can confirm from Google’s documentation, as it’s always been our aim to give readers accurate, helpful guidance.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

Hondo Flash bass
The Hondo Flash (model H-888) is a headless bass. Its small rectangular body has a large hole in it behind the bridge. Instead of having the fancy Steinberger-style bridge/tuners combo, the tuners are at the end of the body. It's got a stacked humbucker J-style pickup and a piezo pickup in the bridge. The controls (volume/tone/blend) are roller knobs inset into the top of the body, and there's also a series/parallel switch.

MOOV Travel Guitar 8-string
The MOOV travel guitar is shaped like a big stick with pieces of wood bracketed on to give it the traditional guitar silhouette. They make 6, 7, and 8-string models. The one in the picture is the 8-string. It's a headless guitar, and the tuners are on the body where the pickups would normally go. (If this were a normal headstock, it would be a 4/4 split and slotted.) The bridge has a piezo pickup, and there's also an internal mic. There's a 3-band EQ, a blend knob for the mic and piezo, a volume slider, and a phase button.

Westone The Rail bass
The Westone The Rail Bass is a headless model like a Steinberger, but the body is made of three small pieces of wood held together by two metal rails (hence the model name). The bridge and tuners are on one block, the pickup mounts to the middle one, and the neck is bolted to the third one. The pickup block slides freely on the metal rails, letting you get various tones. The output jack and volume knob are also on this block. There's no tone control, since you can change tones by moving the pickup block. There's a knob on top of the pickup block that locks it in place once you've found the right tone. The bridge and tuners are separate, unlike a Steinberger's design. "The Rail" is painted in red on the neck block, and the fretboard has red marker dots.
