LOVE how many people are getting introduced to @michaelhobbes.bsky.social for the first time via this @volts.wtf episode.

Next: a small army of energy nerds get radicalised (complimentary) by Maintenance Phase & @ifbookspod.bsky.social. Maybe even make the jump to @fivefourpod.bsky.social...
Today on Volts: I'm joined by the great @michaelhobbes.bsky.social to discuss "reactionary centrism," an intellectual tendency that's come to dominate US public life. You know the type: would never view themselves as conservative, yet finds voluntary pronoun use vastly more aggravating than fascism.
All about "reactionary centrism"
Michael Hobbes joins me to diagnose the pundit class's obsession with scolding the left while the right burns down the house.

Important snippet from a @rachelcoldicutt.bsky.social thread on the recent AI research from govt, and the launch of the national training programme.

Equating 'reported low confidence' with 'low knowledge' - rather than 'inherent technical untrustworthiness of the tool' - is particularly cynical.
However this is quite interesting because I think it shows a high level of discernment. People are right to have low confidence in this because very few available tools assist people with provenance, security, risk assessments - this isn't a skills issue but a tooling one

Haven't read the detail on this yet, but looks pretty promising. That's a big number...
This will get massively overshadowed today and as ever the devil is in the detail, but is should be one of the best things Labour has done. It has the potential to improve the lives and finances of millions of people.

I missed this 6 years ago:

Scotland's £3bn+ A9 road project didn't make financial sense.

But then a bunch of consultants invented a never-before-seen £430m 'driver frustration removal' bonus (SEPARATE to benefits for reduced journey times and collisions).

It changed ROI from -11% to +12%

Cool. 😮‍💨

Active travel campaigners, we can take two things away from this:
1. It works and it's worth it
2. We must think and plan in *decades*
“Copenhagen reported that 62% of its residents are now commuting to work or school by bike — an increase from 52% in 2015 & 36% in 2012, when the City Council launched a 14-year-plan to improve the quality, safety & comfort of cycling.”

Tiny mechanic's win to start the new year!

The transalp had no spark. And with a wiring loom from before the fall of the Berlin wall, the fault could've been *anywhere*.

But: turns out it was just a bad connection at the kill switch! Scrub w/contact cleaner, and it fired right up. Bulletproof ♥️

[screaming at the top of my lungs, once again] the fundamental technology of humanity is care
We didn't survive and thrive as a species because we had warriors or hunters - pretty much every omnivore can manage that.

We did so because we developed Grandmothers, and domesticated Dogs.

Community is what defines us as a species, and every "self-reliant" libertarian shitweasel be damned.
"my least woke opinion is---"

That's enough. We've had enough people indulging in the "thrill of a little conservatism", as a treat. Of considering reactionary thought to be a salacious and taboo in a world descending into reactionary mania.

Give me your MOST woke opinions. We're bringing it back.
