The ugly truth is that we are losing the public narrative re: encampments. Public frustration with homelessness is leading to an acceptance of violating homeless people's human rights.

I need everyone to realize that we can only win if we win back the narrative.

As the crumbling economy ruins more lives and leaves more people homeless, the general public will only see more of them in our parks and subways. Will we help with social services? Or will we spend ever-increasing amounts on police to beat on them because “people should be scared?"
Time to choose.
There it is: CBC radio just had cop / city councillor / former public safety minister Kash Heed on to explain that “people should be scared,” “militarization is needed,” people w/ mental illness are a public threat when “occupying public spaces.”

In short, a call for mass institutionalization.

Not that hard a message, yet simultaneously somehow completely beyond the capability of any Canadian political party (or even individual politician) to put forward.

Is it too much to ask for a proper left, working-class party, instead of having to vote for the least-evil right-wing option?
Tell workers that you will protect and create new jobs while assuring them that if employers fail them, the government will be there to support them. It's not that hard of a message.

This moment is SO FULL of possibilities right now and its absolutely enraging that our politicians refuse to think beyond doing late stage capitalism harder.

Like the collapse of US tourism should trigger a national domestic tourism strategy, complete with nationally-owned services!

This is really funny because after congestion pricing launched and the haters were instantly proved wrong — traffic really did go down, transit use really did go up — they clung to "well let's see the business receipts!" as a last resort. And now we know business receipts are through the roof!

Nearly 2 years to the day later, we're looking at yet another major storm system that will again leave Toronto's public transit inaccessible to those who use mobility aids.

What has changed since early March 2023?

- Commit to building the housing people need/deserve
- Uphold homeless people's rights
- Have a compassionate plan to reduce homelessness

What flexposts say: "We could use steel bollards but a bollard might scratch a car and that would be a tragedy. So, we're going to use these instead — things literally designed to be run over — because protecting even one car from a scratch is worth thousands of pedestrian deaths every year."
Because city agencies are typically reactive, not proactive; crews aren’t scouring the city for downed flexposts. But in a rare victory for municipal services, explains @johnsurico.bsky.social, if you tell them, they will come.

A bunch of councillors who made a big show about opposing Trump and supporting local stuff are showing their whole selves at Council right now by just saying that people who live in places that they don't like don't count and we shouldn't make room for people in even modest midrises.
"We are the loneliest city in Canada. Why is that? Well, what kind of city will it be when most of our development in our major corridors is 50-storey towers where people don't know their neighbours?" says Councillor Lily Cheng.

I would caution anyone entertaining this sentiment. Mass protests are likely to be dangerous. We no longer live in a country where the right to peacefully assemble exists for opponents of the regime.

For those who do not have the option, just open the centres November to March.
Some people think it’s not that cold out at -13°c. I just walked down to the mailbox and it is skin biting cold out. I have a place to come into to get warm, thankfully. The city of #LdnOnt (London Ontario Canada) thinks warming centers aren’t needed until it is -15°c for those less fortunate.
