Weird how some drug dealers get pardons while others are subjected to extrajudicial murder just on suspicion of it.
June 2024: "Arkansas Congressman Steve Womack‘s [(R)] son James Phillip Womack was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to distributing methamphetamine."

Jan. 2026: Trump pardons James Phillip Womack.

i think about this every time i look at the latest Overdrive or Hoopla or Kanopy invoice. unless prices or demand stabilize, our budget and thus our library will soon be describable as “lessee of digital content with a legacy dead-tree side concern.” 📚
No surprise to librarians, but perhaps surprising to users, demands/prices for ebooks /audiobooks are killing public library budgets. David Szalay's book, Flesh,” costs DCPL:
$28.99 hardcopy
$59.99 ebook
$69.99 audiobook
DCPL owns hardcopy; rents & must repurchase ebook & audio book every 2 yrs.
Libraries can't afford e-books. D.C. lawmakers have a plan.
The demand and price for e-books is up — and it’s busting the D.C. Public Library budget.

It's been a while since we did Books I've Read to a 4yo That Are Not Meant For 4yos. The rundown of the last 3 months:

The Borrowers, Lost Evangeline, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle (arbitrary scores: C- / A / B). I decided to do a "theme" cluster as we prepare for, potentially, a series
Maybe to someone used to reading High Fantasy it might feel like it lacks lore or action, but the events span the gamut of emotion, both for the characters experiencing the story and for the reader. Where the story lacks descriptive detail, the lovely illustrations do enough to anchor the story.

this is such a fun thread
It's one of those days I feel like procrastinating.

To make it less wasteful, here is a short thread about the technological story behind the workhorse of the Italian postwar building boom:

The "solaio in laterocemento."

And why it's an excellent example of light prefab and discrete innovation.

I'm struggling to think of what branch it sits on this administration hasn't nearly sawed off. They've antagonized or materially attacked virtually every allied country in the world, the business and finance elite, the military, the intelligence community, the judiciary...what is left?

you should never watch things at resolutions higher than they were originally meant for, even when available, because best case its so distracting you cant suspend disbelief bc it starts looking like a mid 2000s daytime soap (idk why, it just does) and worst case this stuff happens

i hate to be all like “decline of culture” but, god damn, kids’ TV (outside apple TV+) has sloppified worse than any other genre. And don’t reply “what about bluey?” bc that’s not a show for kids, thats a show for parents produced so that kids don’t mind watching it and i will not debate that point.

I mean this with the utmost solemnity and sincerity, go fuck yourself with a spiked bat you toad-kissing ass-licker. Protecting ACA *was* the fight, keeping RFK out of HHS *was* the fight, preventing deportations *was* the fight. Winning elections is for passing policy, not for chasing a high score.
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

Great and important reporting here. But the administration has been pretty clear about how these judges need to rule in order to keep their jobs. So I think we’re well beyond perception of fairness.
Immigration judges with prior immigrant defense work make up the largest share of those fired by the Trump admin. NPR identified 70 fired immigration judges. The changes have at least shifted perception of fairness in these courts

My latest investigation: www.npr.org/2025/11/06/g...

look, i get that it seems ridiculous to spend $30 for two-dozen colored pencils for a 4 year old but, hear me out here, you have to sharpen them like 1/10th as much, they last forever, and you never have to worry about sharpening only to break the lead or find out the lead is already broken inside
