If you're afraid to push back as a journalist because you might lose access, what are you losing access to? Liars who you transcribe? Is that what you dreamed of doing? Have some dignity.

For many years, the assumption has been that cell size and function are regulated by genes and associated signaling pathways. But a new study reveals that cell size in fact hinges on metabolism—in particular, the fate of a metabolite called pyruvate. cen.acs.org/biological-c... #chemsky 🧪
How a cell regulates its size
Metabolism, far from being just a housekeeping function, underlies all changes in cell size and function

If you’re in Los Angeles, be aware that there’s a gas pipeline leak that’s spreading across the SF Valley…stinks and prolonged exposure could make you sick. Source is up in Castaic and is already down as far as Northridge.

the kids on my block take pictures with 2000's digital cameras and polaroids because they "look more real." I thought it was sort of a philosophical problem until i started to think about the fast that these devices aren't just passive lenses.
this field biologist does a great job highlighting the insidiousness of AI editing

these one-click AI edit buttons are incredibly appealing to many photographers, amateurs and professionals alike, and are framed as innocuous

this is worth sharing and educating people about

I'm doing that thing where I'm watching the UPS truck on their map while the clock is ticking towards the meeting I need to be on, hoping they'll deliver before that meeting.

I just don't get the logic for how the deliveries are organized.

Ah yes, smart app:

- Logins in via passwordless email authentication.
- Gets an email a few minutes later asking "Did you login?"

Soooo, you handled the login process but need to confirm whether or not the SAME email address is okay with that login?

Amazing.

Miyoko's Creamery makes some of the best vegan butter I've ever tried/cooked with. It would be amazing if she could take back control over her company.

Because of Halloween, Minecraft's got this enderman running around the launcher. I'd pulled it up and left the room then came back for something, forgetting it was up doing its thing. I heard the enderman chirp and my fight or flight response kicked in for a split second... lol

Apparently some folks are playing real dumb about skull symbols so let’s play a little game I like to call “Nazi skull or not a Nazi skull”

First up, the Jolly Roger. This is a pirate skull, not a Nazi skull. It means you might get robbed, but prolly not genocided.

This. When I saw the news hit, that's when I knew the Nobel committee and the "Peace" prize was so utterly corrupt. "Let's give it to whomever the ruling class decides on."
By giving the award to the leader of Venezuela’s hardline, antidemocratic, right-wing opposition, the Nobel Committee has effectively crowned Trump’s vision of power and intervention as ‘peace’.

Machado has been committed to undermining Venezuelan democracy and sovereignty for decades.
How Trump got his Nobel Peace Prize after all
The Nobel given to Venezuela’s Maria Corina Machado was really a prize for Donald Trump.

Really want to encourage libraries - especially school libraries - to put no-AI content into your collection development policy. At the very least, if you have a clause in there about requiring accurate information, you can use that to weed out or prevent genAI purchases.
“When you get a suspicious book, “you look it up to see what else the [author] has written. And you see there's 30 things, and none of them have any reviews, and they were all written in the last two years,” DeMeester-Lane says.”
How Local Librarians Keep AI Slop Off the Shelves
AI is being used to create nonsensical, sometimes dangerously inaccurate books. Local librarians are tasked with keeping these volumes out of their collections.
