Much of this new weather system hitting the east coast - again - is coming through the yellow area of ocean - some of it >3degC above normal. Marine heatwaves supercharge storms and add a heap more water vapour to the atmosphere = more rain.

I/S is correct. But the underlying issue is that NZ's shonky electricity "market" creates perverse incentives by rewarding the most expensive source of energy in any time slot. So generators (and their shareholders) are incentivised to keep cheap stuff like solar and wind out of the mix.
National is going to raise your power prices to pay for a facility that might never be used, simply to create the illusion that gas has a future and discourage industrial users from switching.

Some governments raise taxes to fund public health and education. Not Luxon. He is literally raising taxes to subsidise fossil fuels. He is putting a levy on our electricity bills to pay for his LNG import terminal.
