I am whiter than a hotel towel, but I gladly and wholeheartedly adopted the holiday tamale habit. I smoked a pork shoulder for 18 hours and added green chilis for these. Many thanks to all of the generous method and recipe sharers that have allowed me to improve every year.,

As expected, I've gotten to ridiculous amounts of treat making. We do not exchange gifts in our family, we exchange baskets of goodies to live off of during the Pajamas Times between Christmas and New Years. Cookies, fudge, peppermint bark and dilly crackers are done.

I really do love this and completely get it. As someone with a very non-naturally occurring hair color and a pixie cut, I think I probably give off that vibe as people do ask me for assistance. And I’m okay with it.
Things are Terrible, but this isn't.

Be weird.

The year is 2035. There are three game studios left. Each one produces a game every 10 years, killing 250+ developers in the process. They all accidentally make the same game because they used genAI in preproduction. They sell 500 million units each, missing quarterly targets. Everyone is laid off.

I just tipped a grocery delivery driver fresh out of the oven cookies and I thought she was going to cry. Please remember to be kind to retail and delivery folks this week. I can remember being in the front lines for years and it's so rough.

The Great Baking/Candymaking has commenced. Almond and hazelnut biscotti, chocolate swirl meringues, chocolate chip cookies, peppermint bark, butter mints, chocolate peanut butter fudge, and maybe some marshmallows if I have the time.

Blessed Yule to everyone, may the longest night be peaceful for you and yours. I’m snuggled up with book and cats and pretending there is no work tomorrow.

Yeah, this whole thread explains that dead eyed sadist better than anything else I’ve seen.
mr beast feeling ennui nudges his mode of evil into “italo calvino story from after he realized more people would read the work if he was whimsical & allegorical about fascism as opposed to just straight up saying, ‘luciano lived with the dead in the body pits, eating worn leather to stay full.’”
In Mr Beast’s new video, a woman is alone for two weeks on a platform in the sky. and each day, a balloon is released at an inopportune moment for her. And if she fails to shoot the balloon with an arrow, they take a small portion of the platform that is her home

Today I was in a one on one meeting with someone in my organization I have not worked with before and the first thing they said was something about working with AI for ideas and I realized I would never take this person seriously or go out of my way to help them again. So that was awful.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

The Truth.
Gen X women have had it. We are dealing with elderly parents, work drama, 401k worries, crumbling bodies, inflation, misogyny, and Dave Navarro no longer hosting Ink Master.

Our patience is as thin as our eyebrows. Be nice.

We have reached the point where every time my husband says potatoes I burst into song. Whimsy shall be my armor against this bleakness.
a cartoon character says oh potatoes and molasses if you want some-oh just ask us
Alt: Gregory from the animated series Over the Garden Wall sings "oh potatoes and molasses if you want some-oh just ask us" while pouring molasses over potatoes for a raccoon dressed as a little waif boy

In happier news, I guess we were really good this year and got a case of Passaggio wine delivered as an early Christmas gift. This 2018 Grenache is so so good. If you are in NorCal, go find some. Made a hearty bean soup (bless the lowly ham hock) and crusty bread to go with.

Trying to get back to some of my weekly household rituals to ground myself. Putting bread together to bake tomorrow, soaking beans for soup Tuesday and finishing up Monday laundry. Ticking the boxes helps a bit.

I built a shelter for the feral tortie that has been sleeping on my porch to thank her for patrolling the yard and chicken coop all year. It will be bitterly cold next week and I hope she likes it. Maybe one day she’ll let me pet her. #catsky #tnr #communitycats
