I want to very gently say something, and I hope nobody will be mad: If somebody on the internet says something that is NOT about politics and NOT about how terrible everything is, it’s a kindness not to reflexively make a comment (in jest or not) that brings it back to those things.

I'm having a really stressful awful day and I keep seeing these posts about how people are mad 40M folks get SNAP. Two of those people are my nephews who lost their mom 5 years ago and live with my parents and I really think I might do violence if I heard one of these comments in person right now.

The worst offenders, like Walmart, decimated the locally owned and operated of the small towns they took over starting in the late 80’s. In too many places, Walmart or fast food places are the only jobs left. This will hurt rural folks so much with fewer resources available to help them.
Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

I too just left a scathing message about being associated with this atrocity. People can quit jobs. I wouldn't be associated with this for any amount of money.

Back from the first half of this amazing day. It was a fabulous book release party at Audrey with @koshersoul.bsky.social with a whole hog bbq and all the fixings from his new cookbook Recipes From the American South. I will have to chase down some scuppernongs for that fabulous grape hull pie.

I got two pints of okra and some peppers from my CSA this week and together with my last tomatoes made the soup from @koshersoul.bsky.social new book, the one I told ya’ll to buy. I really mean it. Will repost the NPR article w/recipe in the comments. History worth knowing AND eating.

I do, in fact, look like I have been dragged through a hedgerow backwards. While catching the little roo for rehoming, one of the Cochins made an escape and I had to herd her through the creekbed back towards the chicken yard. I thought I had ducked some vicious brambles which sliced my head open.
