For taxpayers, every piece of cycling infrastructure is a gift that keeps on giving.

An asset that returns annual savings in congestion, pollution, maintenance, safety and healthcare over its lifetime.

Stop asking whether your city can afford to invest in cycling. Ask whether it can afford not to.

The Mayor will release his draft budget today. We know there's money for Lansdowne, but how will the budget affect people who rely on more important city services?

It’s a predictable pattern. Suburban and rural (mainly) voted to spend more, get less, align themselves with private interest to fund a project that doesn’t affect them, delivering lower value at the expense of urban quality of life and wrecking women’s pro hockey in the capital.

Tremendous to hear some veteran Ottawa city councillors argue that Lansdowne 2.0 is needed because the previous overhaul that they voted for is crap.

I’d like to save the Ford Government of Ontario $9 million dollars of the public’s money.

No, a 60km tunnel under highway 401 isn’t feasible.

In fact, it’s colossally stupid.

It’s possible that it’s all a distraction from the failure to properly invest in public transit.

You’re welcome.

Lansdowne 2.0 is not what residents are telling us we need as a city. The cost is too much, the outcome too inadequate and uncertain, and the benefits accrue to too few. This morning's rally was energizing. We have an off-ramp; we should take it.

I am buoyed by the community who stood in the cold to say they don’t support Lansdowne 2.0. Ottawa deserves better, and so do women’s hockey fans. There is no stadium emergency. This plan is built on financial fiction and my grandkids will still be paying for it. I will vote no with my whole heart.

Only one day until Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and 15 Councillors vote to saddle Ottawa with half a Billion in debt for Lansdowne 2.0.

Also remember that the next municipal election is in 2026.

This is shaping up to be big. A mass movement of people telling City Hall ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

To stop throwing away our money. Stop endangering the Charge.

WE NEED YOU to show up so Councillors think long and hard, and understand the consequences, before voting for Lansdowne.

Friday 8:30am.
Our last chance to stop Lansdowne 2.0. Show up this Friday.

A 340-metre-long cycling bridge with a name to match its curves — Anaconda in Lelystad turns 20. I went to see how this striking structure, and its smaller neighbour, have aged in the Netherlands’ youngest province. New video and blog post now online.
The Anaconda Cycling Bridge in Lelystad Turns 20
There are still a few provinces that are somewhat underrepresented on my blog. Flevoland is one of them. But this month a special and remarkably long cycling bridge in Lelystad is turning 20, and that seemed like the perfect reason to pay it a visit. As an unexpected treat, a second bridge, very close by, will turn 21 next month. What does 20-plus-year-old cycling infrastructure look like in the Netherlands’ youngest province?

Day 2 of sandwich guy does not disappoint.

Should never have made it to court, but 10/10 for entertainment value.
Back for Day 2 of Sandwich Guy’s trial. In government opening statement: “This case is about the fact that you can’t go around throwing stuff at people when you’re mad.”

Agent Lairmore is done with his testimony. Prosecution asked further about the condiments and he said there was mustard on his uniform and an onion hanging on his radio antenna. Don’t think defense was going for a pun when she called him a “seasoned officer,” but you never know…

We’re back to the sandwich video. The paper, the defense points out, is still on. “You don’t see there’s mustard on it?” “You can’t tell there’s ketchup on it?” Mayonnaise? Lettuce? Tomato? “In fact, that sandwich hasn’t exploded at all?” Witness says the sandwich “looks bent and out of shape.”

No city councillor should be so financially illiterate that this sounds like a good plan. #OttPoli
The revenue graphs project that it starts to make $ around 2050 but is dependent on sports team revenue until 2070 but team is only committed to be here until 2042; loses money until 2050; if team leaves, we’re on the hole until 2070; does that make any sense? Is that risk we’re willing to take? 3/

Worth nothing some important facts about this plan: property taxes are integral to financial numbers and depend on taxes from the towers being used to offset the costs, rather than going towards all city revenues; that’s not how property taxes work anywhere else in city 1/

If the city of Ottawa were smart, they would consider Ottawa pro sports holistically.

What facilities do we need to host sports events city wide? Where should we invest to make that happen?

We will never get FIFA games without grass turf. This is not city building, it is political.
