Mark Carney’s journey from climate ‘visionary’ to pipeline promoter
Environmentalists believed the former Bank of Canada governor was a true believer in the need for the world to move away from fossil fuels. Then he became prime minister.

Since this op-ed specifically cites the example of other countries let me remind you that Canadian liberals' decades-long attempt to reconcile with the oil and gas industry and the province of Alberta have yielded no benefits for climate whatsoever and I'm not aware of any economic benefits either.

Max makes some excellent points here, so I’ll respond as much as I can before my dinner plans call me away (more tomorrow). Where I think we agree is on the importance of policy durability.
Another thread:
Since my name keeps getting called out here, I thought it would be useful to take a look at Greenpeace's analysis here.

A quick thread:
He's done so by ignoring long-term costs, the precedent it sets federally and the very real risk to frontline communities. I find it irresponsible and I'm hoping through this back and forth that the full story (and its impacts) behind this political betrayal can be brough to light.

Because, no, this isn't a stronger economy. It's stolen Indigenous land. Fuel for wildfires. A paycheque for the rich. And not the future Canada is asking for.

Canada is not immune (see Bills C2, C5, C8, C9, C12 and related provincial legislation). Important to note criminalisation of protest is a response to weakening of fossil fuel industry's power and legitimacy. The beast is wounded, and thus more dangerous.

Only in Canada. A deal that will increase oil production and weaken climate policy is good for climate because:
- oil producers didn't like those pesky climate policies, and
- the economic benefits of "any" incremental emissions from 1.4 Mb/d is worth it.
