what impressed me most today was that a huge crowd of people who mostly had never been tear gassed managed to retreat without running or trampling each other. under a cloud of gas that was not moving (zero wind), people held onto each other and walked blind down a street packed tight as sardines
Just got gassed pretty good at the labor union anti-ICE protest in Portland. Massive march, 5-10k strong. Vibes were very much liberal rather than radical. Lots of kids and older folks.

They gassed the whole crowd as soon as it marched on ICE, in broad daylight.

One of the best organizers I know in the Twin Cities has a great line, "We can't always take away the hurt, but we can take away the alone."

The app features gamified neighborhood maps, like Pokémon Go for hunting immigrants. Palantir warns the software is "not for mass prioritization of locations where lots of people it [ICE] might detain could be based."

But this is what actually happens when you give ICE a map and a quota:

A few days later, Wired reported that DOGE was building exactly this: cross-government data connections with Palantir — the literal company with that name, not just the metaphor.
Palantir Is Helping DOGE With a Massive IRS Data Project
For the past three days, DOGE and a handful of Palantir representatives, along with dozens of career IRS engineers, have been collaborating to build a “mega API,” WIRED has learned.

Wow. @mprnews.org just had on the head of the Minnesota Department of Corrections to correct the record, explain that DHS is not using available channels to target people who represent a danger to the public, but is using this description to cast an overly broad net on the state (my paraphrase)

I just drove past an abandoned car, with the doors open. (wrong side of highway, others had already stopped.)
This is Minnesota. No one for any reason intentionally leaves their car on the side of the road w/the doors open in January
Please understand: nothing has changed here. Please tell people

Minneapolis residents are taking a stand against hotels like Hilton that house ICE goons, demanding that they refuse service to them. This movement is gaining traction, and it’s working.

Until 9/11, you could cross into Canada from Detroit with a driver's license. You're supposed to show your birth certificate or passport, but 9 times out of 10, they'd wave you through.

9/11 and the Bush admin's "War on Terror" changed everything. Can't remember the last time I've been to Windsor.
For a very long time you did not need a passport to cross back and forth to Mexico and Canada. I am Gen X and El Paso folks my age remember crossing to drink in Mexico for the night and then coming back home. There are families who continued living in the same place when the border moved.
The people who are saying shit like "well it's either this or the borders are totally open" are doing their best to convince America that we should have completely open borders.

One nice thing about biking, is that when you hear some kids yelling “FUCK ICE COOKIES FOR SALE!” it’s easy to pull over and buy a bunch.

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

Among many other protests against ICE today, sit-ins at Target stores were held nationwide this afternoon, calling on the corporation to "stop collaborating with ICE."

Protesters with signs sang songs & chanted softly as customers passed by.

I LOVE WARD 9. I went to another one in Powderhorn today and it literally allowed kids to play safely outside with their families. ❤️
Minneapolis is trying out new forms of resistance. They're doing pop-up blockade block parties. This one is on Cedar and 34th, a main route into the city. They have a stereo, food & a fire. MPD is present but not interfering. Lots of honks of support. ICE agents have been reported detouring around.

I’d be supportive of bringing forward a resolution saying the City will Sponsor “National ICE Out Day” in Minneapolis as a City-hosted event series.

This means the City would waive the application fee for all City-issued residential block event permits required for this potential annual event.
We could have National “Ice” Out based on National Night Out like we do in August. Block parties, etc.
