Q: Have you given any more thought to possibly suspending habeas corpus?

TRUMP: Suspending who?

Q: Habeas corpus

TRUMP: I don't know. I'd rather leave that to Kristi.

It’s insane the which the Very Smart Consensus continues to be that a party wins power by being polite, avoiding extreme positions, and providing detailed moderate policy positions, when the GOP has seized total control by doing the exact opposite of all of those things

imagine thinking, in the year of our lord 2025, that Donald Trump is capable of human empathy
It says something about Trump’s all-out war on free speech that the New York Times couldn’t find a more credible person than “presidential historian” Craig Shirley to defend it. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/21/u...

Truth truth truth. Anywhere where truth is valued and not systemically eliminated will be targeted. It will lead to the frustration of the centrists who try to find moderation with fascism. With liberals who try to make peace with it.

Truth truth truth. It’s an essential ingredient to freedom.

I honestly feel like this is all being done to mock, not to persuade. They know it's absurd to use a traumatic head injury that they caused as an excuse for starvation. They know those angry about it can't do anything about it. The absurdity is a flex of power.
Netanyahu shared a video from Olivia Reingold arguing that it doesn’t count as starvation if the kids in Gaza had preexisting conditions

* real, valid, legitimate, serious, important (to describe issue raised by Republicans)
* yea (when voting on Republican bills)
* distraction (to describe bad thing Republicans did)
* woke (in derogatory sense)

as a leftist, leftists need to be better at realizing that there are basically two groups of "liberals", one that means it and one that doesn't, and the group that means it is what you encounter on here while the one that doesn't holds most of the "liberal" elected offices and media sinecures
It's actually important to keep in mind, given how much left-liberal infighting happens on here, that when the predominant organs of American intellectual thought talk how much they hate "the left", they mean basically everyone on this site.
Maybe it's a cliche to say "listen to my hour long podcast and you'll understand you're wrong" but I do encourage @cathyyoung63.bsky.social to listen to this www.liberalcurrents.com/neon-liberal...

The thing about the right pretending to care about free speech on campus in order to end free speech is that it was obvious that's what they were doing, mostly because they said that's what they were doing, and all the "neutral" media people who credited them with good faith were part of the scam.
If anyone is curious about the current list of search terms being used by right wing activist organizations to harass university professors, here's a public records request I received today from Mike Howell of the Heritage Foundation. Not intimidating or meant to curtail by my speech at all, right?

This is the core proposition & selling point for reactionary thought: not that they are better, but simply that *everyone* is corrupt, everyone is a crook, everyone's just out for themselves, so you might as well get yours. That is the molten core of right-wing thought everywhere.
Sen. John Kennedy defends Emil Bove: "If everyone is corrupt, nobody is corrupt."

the three unfortunately frequent problems “people don’t believe negative facts about the right”, “people believe any bullshit about the left”, and “the press thinks their job is to anticipate what people want to hear” are self-perpetuating
so many of america's problems are downstream of the fact that legacy media elites are infinitely more interested in writing the one same article about some kid at Cornell shouting that toothpaste is racist instead of covering that the SecDef is a member of a rape cult
the basic issue is that hegseth is a violent, monstrous bigot who belongs to a church which nonmetaphorically considers rape sacramental

the thing about “democrats should take popular cultural positions” is that what constitutes popular is a function of an interaction between the public and elites. if a faction of elites start screaming about a vulnerable minority and another faction says they have a point, this shapes the public.
In a leaked recording, State Senator Elena Parent (D-42) said she’d vote for Republican transgender healthcare bans because trans rights are too “unpopular."

"You can go right to heck. I don’t think I will lose re-election based on you screaming at me"

Navigating the Nonsense and Propaganda of Clownish Authoritarianism

Ignoring what Trump says won’t work. Constant outrage is not a viable strategy either. I suggest we ask three questions that can help us engage Trump’s dangerous outlandishness.
