Doctor Who and Downton Abbey star's new crime drama with 'mismatched detectives' is on TV tonight
Doctor Who and Downton Abbey star's new crime drama with 'mismatched detectives' is on TV tonight
Cooper and Fry, the new crime series featuring Doctor Who star Mandip Gill and Downton Abbey star Robert James-Collier as a pair of "mismatched detectives", is on TV tonight. Based on Stephen Booth's Cooper and Fry novel series, the crime drama stars James-Collier and Gill as a pair of "chalk-and- cheese" police officers who work in the Peak District. In a place where "every trail happens to lead to folklore and murder", local cop Ben Cooper (James-Collier) must join forces with newcomer Diane Fry (Gill) to attempt to solve a series of peculiar cases. The synopsis reads: "In the Peak District, mismatched detectives Ben Cooper and Diane Fry must work together on a series of unusual cases to get results. What to Read Next "Despite Fry's pessimism of local folklore, they'll need to navigate not only the twisted paths of the cases before them, but also the shadowy beliefs that still hold sway in the hills." Directed by The Dig's Ryan Tohill, the new series is airing on Channel 5 tonight from 8pm, meaning Downton and Doctor Who fans can catch some of their favourite stars very soon. In their review of the show, the Radio Times likened the lead detective's relationship to that of Mulder and Scully in The X-Files. They wrote: "But it’s not just their demeanours that set them apart, as Cooper is open to the folkloric traditions that are woven through the community of Edendale, while Fry is far more sceptical of superstitions. "As such, theirs is a partnership with hints of The X-Files, though here these competing philosophies play out against the disquieting backdrop of the isolated countryside." Announced back in July, the new crime series will consist of four feature-length episodes that each clock in at 120 minutes. Gill is best known for playing fan-favourite companion Yaz Khan to Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who, a role she played from from 2018 to 2022. Meanwhile, James-Collier is known for his roles as Liam Connor in Coronation Street and Thomas Barrow in Downton Abbey. Cooper and Fry airs at 8pm on 5. The new edition of Living Legends is here! It’s brave to pick on a vulnerable group of people and then cry because people call you out on it?

No way there is any bravery there at all. Not a scrap.
"Comedian Jimmy Carr, 53, has since applauded Linehan’s “bravery”, saying at one of his stand-up gigs in the US: “Graham Linehan. I f------ love Graham. Because whether you agree with Graham or JK Rowling or not, you have to admit the thing that’s in short supply in our society is bravery."

These are the voters that Labour strategists have made very clear over a long period of time that they don't want any more, and it's a message that has now been heard
I've been out canvassing quite a lot in London lately. Labour's vote has absolutely evaporated.... it is quite extraordinary to go to places where Labour were on 50-60% of the vote at the last locals and find nobody, or virtually nobody, supporting them.

The phrase 'I voted Labour last time, but...

Happy #TombTuesday everyone! 🥳

The delightful Neolithic tomb at Cors y Gedol, Merionydd, which survives right at the edge of a busy Iron Age & Romano-British farming settlement in north Wales

Pretty accessible too - a short walk from a small car park via a country lane 👌

Archaeologists have unearthed a Bronze Age metropolis in the heart of the Eurasian steppe: an early form of city as complex as those of contemporary, more traditionally 'urban' civilisations, showing how steppe polities were just as sophisticated.

I canvassed hard for Labour in ‘24, with my argument on the doorstep being ‘with 14 years of cruel austerity, surely, we need more kindness in government’.

Feeling a bit of a dick now…

That said, I’ve salved my conscience somewhat by leaving Labour and hoping the Greens 👍🏼

Cost of abolishing university tuition fees = £17bn

Cost of making care homes free = £8.3bn

Cost of making trains free to use = £11bn

Cost of hitting net zero = £30.7bn

The annual cost of the above is £67bn, which happens to be the amount of money given in tax relief to the richest 20% of the UK.
