Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

Never pass up an opportunity to alarm people by noting that Blanche DuBois is thirty years old.

A middle aged Irish woman approached me at a pub and told me I looked like Michael Fassbender, then asked if I even knew who he was. I said of course, he’s a very famous and good looking actor, and she rolls her eyes and goes “oh, he’s not that good looking” and turns heel

this is a rich text but my favorite part is that despite being presumably good at math, her husband is so illiterate that he cannot read a baby's report card
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

The last annual review concluded the SS Richard Montgomery was perfectly safe!

And as a demonstration of exactly how safe it is it also banned aircraft from flying anywhere near it in case, y'know, the wreck spontaneously makes itself a lot safer in a manner incompatible with continued aviation...

Which US accent is it that pronounces “both” as “bollth”?

I can’t pin it down because most of the rest of the accent sounds generalized American to me, but that quirk is delightful.

we didn't immediately get a single all-time folk rock ballad out of the big boat getting stuck, huge L for millennials and zoomers
Ok I had no idea the Edmund Fitzgerald was a contemporary thing for the song, this is like his Toby Keith 9/11 song but about transporting taconite pellets

Twenty-nine sailors drowned when the Edmund Fitzgerald went down in the Great Lakes' icy waters on Nov. 10, 1975. The ship was immortalized in a surprise hit 1976 folk ballad by Gordon Lightfoot.

Dems backed Trump into a corner where he’s advocating for starving Americans and hemorrhaging support. If they vote to let him off the hook in exchange for nothing it’s a cataclysmic failure. I know people are in pain but insulating Republicans from political consequences is not the answer.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person.

The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person.

People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives.

And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.

just to clarify (and kevin knows this so don’t @ him) call no matter who your senators are. the caucus will pay attention to backlash
Call the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and they will connect you with your senator's office.

If you're represented by one of the squishier centrists, be sure to make a call. Now.
Sounds like the squishes in the senate caucus are ready to pull the plug with no ACA changes. This is real. If you want to register your opinion you shld call yr senator in the next hour. They not only want to reopen w/nothing. They want cover from their colleagues who still want to hold out.

Once again, we need to define what “feminism” is here. Not everything any woman ever does—not even in the political realm, and not even concerning gender—is “feminism.” Opposing the rights of women as a class to equal status and dignity is in fact called “antifeminism.”

Posted this elsewhere: Patriarchy ruins the workplace every day. No universal healthcare nor reproductive care, no affordable childcare, no paid time off for pregnancy, maternity leave nor family support, because the template for ‘employee’ is a male, unattached worker paid as little as possible.

About 22 years ago I was standing on the steps of the NY Public Library with friends, waiting for an anti-war march to start, and a middle-aged guy in a faded bomber jacket called up to us “Good moooorrrning, communist pigs!“

It was the cheeriness of his tone that really stuck with us all.
do you ever have things that someone has said to you that live forever in your head (non-serious edition)? some older boomer hippie guy said “hahmmus gives you fahts” to me 26 years ago at a free fridge and i think of it every fucking single time i buy hummus to this day.
