Thank goodness for YouTube. I wanted to check that a childhood memory wasn't false so I found the Opening Ceremonies for the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. My childhood memory was not false, per se, but it was just a snippet of the fantastical craziness that happens after the Cauldron is lit.
