The movies don't really get into it, but it's worth remembering that Denethor went crazy because he spent too much time doomscrolling on the Palantír and it cooked his brain

Kylo Ren gave his life so that the Reylo-industrial complex could save Hollywood, etc.
(for those who don't know: this is a movie based on a book that started as reylo fanfic--so daisy ridley's actual real-life husband will be an adam driver stand-in playing opposite a daisy ridley stand-in)

"What is even the point of being alive if you're just gonna continue managing rot?"

Exactly.
I had a REALLY lovely time talking to @milesklee.bsky.social at Rolling Stone about why The Onion is thriving.

It's because we're one of the only legacy outlets unafraid to accurately reflect the mood of this country.

That mood? Everyone fucking hates this.

Newfoundland was key to proving plate tectonics. 1. At Dover Gap you can literally see the ancient American & Euro-African plates. 2. Gros Morne’s mountains are 1 BILLION years old. 3. Tablelands is one of only 2 places on earth where you can walk on the mantle that has emerged through the crust.

This sentence just plopped down somewhere in the depths of me like a pebble in water and is rippling through in ways that are coming like waves. I think the rippling is rage.
I think I’m only afraid to die because this country keeps wasting my time.

I've been thinking a lot about Beyoncé's 2016 Super Bowl performance and how it shifted culture. She wasn't even the main act, it was Coldplay! She did a medley with Bruno Mars! www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9cU...

This reminds me of when Beyoncé performed Formation at the 2016 Super Bowl evoking the Black Panther Party. I feel like she was the bridge between Kaepernick and the Black Panther movie. The SNL skit of the white backlash at the time keeps popping into my head. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ociM...

Is a toss up for me on any given day which black pop culture figure drove white people over the edge? Obama, Kaepernick or Black Panther? I know Obama feels like the easy answer. But, that Black Panther movie really messed them up bad. they were really pissed that we wore outfits.

the way to address this crisis isn't to give the boys any more attention than they already get

you need to address the people they are so deeply terrified of becoming. you need to stop treating THOSE people like something other than a Real Human. you need to stop only respecting the Independent.

Dear reader, one actor is playing identical twins.

Women consider variables beyond physical appearance. YOU CAN LEARN TO BE MORE ATTRACTIVE—

BEHAVIORALLY SEXY.

There's something slightly sickening about the fact that attention has been so commodified and extractive-and-extracted by capitalism (data and otherwise) that longterm FACSIMILES of attention are felt-as-luxury. No doubt that luxury-felt-sense will be sold back too us too, as a "benefit".
Tons of thoughts about this essay, but parts like this, beyond eliciting thoughts of ELIZA, are striking because of the report that the most profound experience of attention this person has ever achieved is from a bot.

To me, LLMs are the internet version of plastic. Are there specific uses that could benefit people if used judiciously? Definitely. Will it be overapplied to the extent that it poisons the earth and people's brains for a profit, also yes.
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

Really feels like the need for perfection and the fear of failure has certain people afraid to just experience being alive. It's interesting how tech went from being obsessed with mindfulness/being present to whatever this is.
