my modest disagreement is that i think it is important to signal virtue even if, privately, you are a piece of shit. performing decency is an important part of maintaining the norm that decency is part of a well ordered society.
you are SUPPOSED to signal virtue. The actual argument, such as it exists, is that people are signaling virtue while not actually being virtuous. But you are supposed to signal virtue and BE VIRTUOUS.
Really was one of the dumbest and most harmful things possible for “virtue signaling” to become some kind of epithet. Sending externally visible signals that you are engaging in pro-social behavior is normal, natural, and good, it’s how society works. Other people can’t read your fucking mind.

Our trouble w/ billionaires is that:
– great wealth tempts one to think one has wisdom in equal sum;
– wealth offers a way to manipulate politics to impose ideas, wise or otherwise;
– humanity has no need of new gods (being occupied w/ the old ones), and shouldn’t encourage people to act as such.

You see, when your whole life has been a series of transactions, designed for personal gain, it’s perhaps impossible to comprehend the idea of public goods. When government has only ever been an obstacle for your personal goals, you can’t appreciate it as a system that creates things for others.

Yeah. I've written my book take and am done w the Biden subject, but one question is whether the norms around elderly, ailing politicians can/should survive this.

You feel bad when a colleague is ailing and you want him to bounce back. But you are not in the feelings business. You are governing.
The reason the Biden story won't go away is that the "Biden Inner Circle Coverup" story is the "Feinstein on Judiciary" story is the "Connolly instead of AOC on Oversight" story is the "Republicans are about to pass their Medicaid killer bill because 3 Dems have literally died in their seats" story.

Everyone seems very worried about "Gosh, well what do we tell the transphobic people to get them to vote for Democrats?"

Tell them to get the fuck over it. Tell them, straight to their faces, "I feel embarrassed for you that this is a thing you are whining about."

A related controversial take of mine is that buying into lies and conspiracy theories is also, at some level, a choice.
It's easy to look stuff up. I googled "is crime really up or down," and the first page has the answer (down). Not bothering to do that, or willfully rejecting it, are both choices.
yes

I also think we need to hold them accountable for either

a) not caring enough to find the truth instead of accepting the propaganda
b) choosing to be "low info" voters
My most controversial take about the 2024 election is that Trump voters are adults with agency who made a voluntary choice, and most backed him because they saw what he offers and like it.

It is basically impossible to hold a logically coherent conversation about the 2024 US presidential election using the rules of media approved discourse due to holding voters responsible for anything being forbidden.
The 🇺🇸 voter/consumer, so angry about & Suffering From Inflation™️ that she is breaking all holiday spending & travel records, consuming 14% more in real terms than in 2019, & sitting on tens of billions of dollars in unused gift card balances. Those eggs, though.

Every Dem president in my lifetime has been better than the last and also woefully inadequate.
