I'm Muslim with an M.A. in the history of SWANA and East Africa. But I mostly post about lefty things and dungeons and dragons, these days.
I was just doing the math on how much sugar I used to make my pumpkin pies and realized that the amount of sugar in a slice of my pie is not dissimilar to the amount of sugar in a bowl of the cereal I eat for breakfast. 🤔

The sheer number of ads touting AI tells you how fucked and over-leveraged these companies are. You don't spend this much on marketing a thing you called "inevitable" unless you are seriously underwater and it ain't inevitable

This is wonderful news, and also means it’s time for me to beat the drum I always do when HPV vaccines make the news:

They are not only for women! HPV also causes penile, anal, and head and neck cancers. The latter are particularly deadly. Please vaccinate ALL your children.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

If you're new to cooking or don't trust yourself to recognize a bad AI recipe, for the love on god, do not just use random recipes from random profiles. Find trustworthy sites and creators (Serious Eats, NYT Cooking, J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, Alton Brown) and search their archives for what you need.
NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

Democrats will criticize ICE, then stay mum about this happening in their local police departments. Not that police need any help being bad, but ICE culture will touch every sub-acronym agency in policing. It'll become increasingly hard to criticize one without the other.
This is the context you have to keep in mind when you see these people hyperventilating about addressing this system. This is what they are demanding we preserve literally at any and every cost.

Social movements could stand to learn lessons from d&d groups. Specifically? Let the Face speak for the group.

You want Gork the Barbarian on your side, but it's counter-productive to let him speak for you.

The research for my Master's degree would have been impossible for me without interlibrary loan. Granted, my research specifically wasn't hugely important to society. But a lot of research enabled by interlibrary loan IS important.

And it's an economic access issue.
I used to handle interlibrary loans for a public library. ILL is a magnificent expression of the idea that readers deserve books, and books deserve readers. It’s libraries everywhere pooling their resources for the benefit of everyone.

Killing IMLS could have killed ILL.

This is great news. 📚
