One thing that other countries get right, that the US doesn’t, is recognizing education as a product/benefit for society as a whole. That’s why countries provide free education through college. We’re so focused on segregating education and opportunities, we are missing who the actual “customer” is.

I think that these 8 Senators are falling on the sword for Schumer and other Senators who wanted the shutdown to end. This allows the majority of Senators to save face; and only retiring or not up for reelection Senators take the heat.

Exactly! Ruth’s Chris is fine long as he can afford it. You ask me what I like to do and it’s something you can’t routinely afford, and I’m the one with the problem?! Sounds crazy when you say it out loud but we have to deal with it cause we can do it on our own and don’t need help affording it

When I was in undergrad, 2 football players started arguing during lunch and decided to take it outside. All the players in the cafe, like 5-6 tables of guys, went outside to witness. They were out there for less than 10 minutes. Only like 5 punches were thrown, and only 2-3 connected. (1/2)
I get the sense that a staggeringly high percentage of guys who earnestly say with some regularity “fuck around and find out” simply do not understand that the real life versions of the street or bar fight they are picturing typically last a few seconds, don’t have defined winners, and look stupid

And this is exactly why I now carry my passport with me everywhere. I was stopped by secret service last night as I was driving in DC. It was a very scary interaction for my family, especially my 14 year old nephew who didn’t understand what was happening, and was very upset.

Tangentially related, when I was growing up my district had 1 black teacher. She was my elementary school’s PhysEd teacher & she tried to teach us dbl dutch. The look she gave me when I couldn’t do it ………….. and it didn’t help that she was my dad’s friend. I was so jealous of the dbl dutch girls!
I’m mad that I never learned how to double dutch this good as a kid 😭

Great point. True free speech isn’t needed if everyone thinks and says the same things. Free speech is dissent; it’s a different perspective; it can be divisive and uncomfortable.
there is a point here i want to amplify. the free speech defenders of the mainstream seem to have no awareness that actual free speech is often more fractious and destabilizing than civil and respectful. a society where speech is genuinely free isn’t the deferential space they want it to be.
