I'd love for people to consider "Blanquitos" in the short story category, but I mostly want everyone to read my story about old neighborhoods, childhood friends, and how nostalgia can be a boomerang

Meta has patented AI that can run a dead person's account, continuing to post and chat on their behalf

It can message and video call by replicating a user's online behavior using their past data

Frederick Wiseman - rare case where a 96-year-old filmmaker’s death feels tragic because they had so much more left to do. Uninterrupted streak of curiosity, empathy, wisdom, and quiet anger, ended only by the reality of living in a human body.

Since Cass is again making the rounds for expounding on all the ways we might make fewer trans kids, here’s a piece on how this discourse erases the lives of trans people doing extraordinary specifically because they embraced who they are. Whose rich lives wouldn’t have happened in the closet.
In defense of trans quality of life — Jessica Kant
Today trans people exist in an atmosphere where it has become normal for strangers to demand of us that we extemporaneously provide inarguable, indisputable proof that without very safe medical care w...

I still can’t believe one of the most important and influential wuxia works in Hong Kong cinema is a trilogy where a power hungry and self-made demon god realizes she’s a woman and joyously transitions.
Like its predecessor, the movie’s portrayal of Dongfang’s gender and sexuality, textually subversive thorniness of self-castration and supernatural transformation, is as genuine a queer triumph as I have ever seen. Absolutely fucking fascinating, told with so much life and soulful complication.

And another movie from last night! Vital (2004), dir Shinya Tsukamoto, starring Tadanobu Asano (whom I adored in Gohatto). Ostensibly it’s a dark drama about a medical student recovering his memory while dissecting the cadaver of his girlfriend, who died in the crash that left him an amnesiac 🧵

I firmly hold that if you're gonna gamble, you should HAVE to do it in person. Some shitty bookie's place in the back of a restaurant, or a casino parlor. Be there in-person. Realize what kind of money you're forking over. Accept that you are a degenerate (derogatory).
You should have to go to Vegas, a reservation casino, or another specific venue to gamble.

That friction matters. And, honestly, the social element matters.

Today, we have people spiraling out into crisis at 3 am in their beds. They’re on the edge of bankruptcy and suicide. On their phones.

"In Our Whale Fall Era: The Delicious Deaths and Afterlives of the Digital Humanities"

"A term now more often tolerated than celebrated by friend and foe alike, digital humanities may have finally outlived its tactical convenience. Like the whale carcass that sinks then floats then sinks again, D—"
Despite the above, while it’s useful for signaling the wide array of work Matt mentions— everything from digital archives to quantitative work — a variety I personally find salutary, I’m not attached to the term “digital humanities” (& have even less desire to do discourse about it in the YOOL 2026)

Putting the reminder for myself that tomorrow is my sister's anniversary, and pulling this old thread on death math. CW: death, grief
My birthday is coming up, and I am feeling some sort of way about it so please no happy bdays etc; mentioning for context. I stopped celebrating or even acknowledging mine 3 years ago, then I became as old as my older sister; since then I have been growing progressively older than her. 🧵

Do you or your loved ones speak Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Dutch? I’ve paperbacks in these & many other languages (see the second photo).

Four signed paperbacks for $100, delivered anywhere in Australia.

Help me save space in my cupboards!

(Also, I’m fucking tired of trying. I don’t like struggling and getting smacked down constantly, and getting up and keeping on is not my thing. I’m not interested in resilience and perseverance—it’s stupid and exhausting. I’m really too old for this shit.)
