Your periodic reminder I serialized a sci-fi mystery on Patreon, MAPMAKERS, about something weird on a hostile Internet in a future ten minutes from now. You can read the first chapter for free on my blog;
All Hail the Mapmakers
All hail!  Today I said fuck it, threw it all to the proverbial wind, and launched MAPMAKERS. A science fiction mystery I have been tinkering with for a long time, I am now serializing it over on P…

Vonnegut wrote about Debs (who his grandfather admired), which is how I learned about him. Upon confronted by a judge after being arrested for labor organizing & why a man from means like him would do so, Debs apparently responded with “Because of the Sermon on the Mount.” I think about that a lot.

Computer programmers are not the same as writers and artists. There's nothing wrong with being a craftsman, making tools that help us live, but AI is not a tool, you are not making anything of value.

I will say that -- discussions of tactical violence and non/violence aside -- that I think Chaya should, personally, get her clock cleaned at some point by the people whose lives she tries to ruin

Might add THE QUIET MAN and MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS to the bill too. The 1974 Finney one, of course.

There’s some new construction going on in my neighborhood and the guys are working at night (because there’s a school nearby I guess so they can’t do anything during the day?) so in the night I randomly hear Bigfoot-esque metal knocking, like how some suspect Sasquatch knocks on trees.

"wages have been flat for decades" is an extremely simple, obviously true concept that explains about 80% of all handwringing op-eds and for some reason they just won't say that
"zoomers are killing the bar industry" oh interesting was it zoomers who decided a drink should cost seventeen dollars

His character in SPY, a send-up of the Jason Bourne archetype, is very fucking funny (largely due to how straight-faced he plays it) and I wish he did more comedy.
Jason Statham is set to play Jason Statham in Jason Statham Stole My Bike, a new action-comedy from Bullet Train director David Leitch.

The rise of Gen AI use in professions like teaching and librarianship is connected to the devaluing of those fields and the expectation to do more with less every year. AI offers people a fast and cheap (or free) solution to a problem whose real solution is more funding and resources.

New from me, at @vqr.bsky.social: a few years ago two people contacted me about a TEDx talk I once gave, “The Art of Haunting.”

When I replied I’d never given a TEDx talk, things just got weirder.

On AI, ghosts, what it means to tell a story, and what Italo Calvino saw coming 60 years ago. Enjoy!
The Art of Haunting
The email was innocuous enough. A woman wrote to me explaining how her partner had been talking about my work and how much he’d enjoyed it—in particular, he’d remembered me giving a TEDx talk about gh...

Jesus wept what a bunch of cucked losers.
A genuinely alarming piece in the NYT about how the developers, scientists and assorted techbros behind "AI companions"/"synthetic care" do not even know or understand the potential harms of the tech they're developing but they're too greedy to stop themselves from developing it.

Every time I think about ASOIAF stuff (which isn’t that often but still) this comes to mind; A lot of the the books’ “history” and lore hinges heavily on the fact that this fantasy kingdom was only held together through the threat of a WMD.
i think all the time about what @scumbelievable.bsky.social said about the Targaryens: they're like if each individual Kardashian had their own F-16 fighter jet

If a person says something like "The Enlightenment was a mistake" or "Freedom is incompatible with democracy" or some other reactionary magic spell, that person has established they should not be listened to by anyone. Such opinions should exclude them from polite society and the body politic.
rod dreher is not that interesting. he is a guy very clearly filled with self hatred tied to repressed feelings related to his gender and sexuality, and rather than deal with them, he blames “modernity” and “secularism” for why he’s unhappy. www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...
Rod Dreher Thinks the Enlightenment Was a Mistake
The influential author derides secularism and the modern world. Conservatives—including the vice president—are joining him on a march back to the Middle Ages.
