I do think about the statistic that Wellington has the highest proportion of queer people in the country, and the way the government is attacking Wellington, and wonder if there’s a connection. I think it’s clear that this isn’t the main reason, but maybe it’s playing a part

A drum I keep banging is that things like Welfare and Mimimum Wage and the Cost of Living are all issues for the arts
As cost of living increases, as wages stagnate, as housing becomes more precarious, it becomes harder and harder to be able to spend all your time doing weird shit.

Really the fundamental problem is that "guy who decides if you get to transition or not" is a job that shouldn't exist. Every other issue in trans care is downstream from that.

I once got into an argument with coworkers applying for an endeavour, which was basically “the research you’re proposing is racist”
“ok, but money!”

When Judith Collins announced that Vision Mātauranga was now optional not compulsory in the Endeavour fund I sent her an OIA to try and understand what informed this decision. Did she talk to researchers? particularly Māori researchers? did she talk to iwi and hapū?

NB on the Marsden vandalism: I understand the TPU are going full culture-war over it, specifically targeting Māori and Pasifika researchers and declaring it a victory for 'science'. To which I would say, *actual* scientists understand this is a huge blow to the whole research sector.

I do think that the attacks on social sciences are part of a divide and conquer strategy tbh. I hope this doesn’t become another stem vs arts and humanities thing. The real enemy is neoliberalism. And also the current government, fuck those guys

If I really wanted to fuck up the economy for decades into the future, I’d probably siphon money from education, healthcare, infrastructure, and research into tax cuts for landlords, aggravate racial tensions, wreck the environment, and enter a military alliance against our largest trading partner
