Very stoked about receiving one of the Royal Society's Tāwhia te mana fellowships. I will be building a new lab group as part of my fellowship. Tentatively called the Indigenous Science Rangahau lab which will be housed at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa 🥳🙌🏼

The difference in monitoring between this and any pennies through "māori" research funds 👀👀👀
My closing thought: “Any scientist taking $29m in taxpayers’ money and concealing major project problems would find themselves in very deep trouble. But with MBIE we have not seen anything near a serious investigation, just a report that dodges the issues.” 9/9

Has he broken the RSNZ code of conduct? Probably not (the bar is high). Has he done himself, his university and RSNZ proud? Absolutely not.

It's not enough to just scrape through. These dudes need to do better. So. much. better.

This guy is a Fellow of RSNZ and received their prestigious Rutherford Medal in 2020 (worth $100K) for "preeminent research, scholarship or innovation".

This is what "merit-based" appointments serve up. Absolutely shameful. I'm not sure I've ever seen such a bad interview.

I am willing to believe that an English prof was oblivious to the news cycle & did not realise he was talking money with a registered sex offender, but if you are a Nabokov expert you should realise that you will attract pedos who joyfully misinterpret Lolita, such as this Newsroom journalist.
