Merry Christmas from Edinburgh Corporation Tramways' 1933 illuminated festive tram and Me. This was a design by students at the College of Art and used 2,000 electric bulbs. It ran daily from 4PM with a slogan of "tram it, don't tramp it" encouraging people to use the tram instead of walk.

Not sure I qualify for #DuvetKnowItsChristmas now the Thomas the Tank Engine wallpaper has been replaced. But here is my cat settling down for the night. She just found the hot water bottle mum left for us. I don't think she will give up the bed easily.

My parents are visiting me this year and my dad snores so they sleep separately. I think my mum has done ok here? Sofa bed with proper mattress on top, and festive bedding. Ironing board adds interest....

He’s had to move from his bedroom to the unconverted attic

Cardboard floor & headboard is a nice touch which I’m sure he appreciates

This is the 15th year of #DuvetKnowItsChristmas, which is preposterous. Rules: if you find yourself dealing with unusual / claustrophobic / gaudy sleeping arrangements this Christmas Eve, share a picture with the world. Use the hashtag (with capitalisation) and cc me if you can be bothered.

Unbelievably, #DuvetKnowItsChristmas generates such good will on social media that over the years we've raised somewhere approaching a quarter of a million quid for homeless charities. If you can spare a bob or two, sling some to Centrepoint, and here's the link: www.gofundme.com/f/duvet-know...

This year, as a Caird Research Fellow at Royal Museums Greenwich, I developed a new research project on occupational health, disability, and welfare in the British Royal Navy during the French Wars (1793–1815). Read some of my preliminary findings here: www.rmg.co.uk/stories/mari....
Unfit for service: healthcare and welfare in Nelson's Navy
Hidden in the seemingly mundane bureaucratic letters of the Royal Navy lie some fascinating insights into the role of the British state in providing healthcare and welfare to ill and injured seamen.

Your regular reminder that 'Digital Native' is both wrong but also damaging.

A lot of the frustrations here I've heard from staff recently. One of the approaches around some issues is also mentioned - a focus on professionalism.

Several departments are making this more explicit now, expectations.
If I hear one more person refer to Gen Z or Gen Alpha as digital natives when the students do not know:

1. How to use built-in Word functions like outlining and spellchecker
2. The different types of basic files
3. Interoperability
4. The issues related to uploading

Sadiq gets a lot of stick (some entirely justified) but he’s been an utter zealot for clean air via ULEZ, been re-elected twice, and it’s meant fewer kids dying from asthma, and you can see the stars again.
And the air is noticeably cleaner! Literally we can all breathe better thanks to the law!
I refuse to shut up about this: NYC started charging $9 to bring a car into our most transit-rich zone, the haters & trolls predicted doom, but traffic evaporated instantly and here’s Times Square tonite (even after the holiday tourists have left). For a better future, build transit & price driving!

Finally, if you can get through the paywall this piece from earlier in the week illuminates how the experience above is just a tiny part of an industrial-scale, global, and sector-wide catastrophe of AI and citations to nonexistent papers in academic publishing bsky.app/profile/mile...
Academics and technologists are sounding the alarm about a growing crisis in scholarship as we know it: AI-generated citations of nonexistent papers that have infested real journals. Despite being fake, the sources are widely assumed to be authentic the more they appear in published literature.

One thing that absolutely definitely happens for real in the academic job market is that when you do not get a job, the Dean calls you and explains why you didn't get it. This is extra-super true when the explanation is something legally actionable on its face.
You’ll never guess who else experienced ‘racism’ on the job market despite their unimpeachable academic credentials.
