My instant solution to this problem would have been to put the names of both occupants either side with an arrow to show who was who. Reversed on the other side.

There was a great interview with Lawrence Kasdan where he talked about a studio tinkering with his plot beats for a modern streaming show, pushing the payoffs further down the road, until he screamed “SOMETHING HAS TO HAPPEN IN SERIES ONE!” and quit.
