I made a starter pack for KS5 maths (teachers, posters, and other people involved in it)
Most of the starter packs I've seen for maths teachers have been for all age groups, so this one is aimed towards sixth form (16-19 ish)
Please let me know if you'd like adding (or removing)!

In #MathsToday we were exploring polar curves. I suggested that, with Valentine's Day fast approaching, the students could try to impress that special someone with a nice graph. I'm not sure they were convinced 🤣

In #MathsToday my year 1 further maths students were in a computer room playing around with polar graphs on Desmos. It was so great to hear their discussions about the shapes of the graphs, trying to figure out why they were shaped the way they were. #ALevelMaths

Age verification? I used to express my emotional state to my friends by writing song lyrics in my MSN Messenger bio.
Age verification? I had to unplug the telephone to connect to the Internet.
Age verification? My first computer game was zork.

Does anyone happen to have a set of questions on Game Theory, specifically where the pay-off matrices have unknowns (eg k) in them? This one is from the AQA guidance document. Thanks! #ALevelMaths #MathsToday

Teachers: Which is the worst half term of the year, and why is it this one? 😵‍💫😴

I'm sure noone is surprised by this...
Here’s what they found:

Women are interrupted more often than men—by about 10–20% in economics seminars.

Those interruptions are more likely to:
- Cut women off mid-sentence
- Come from men
- Be adversarial rather than clarifying in nature

Core Maths teachers - I’m looking at misleading diagrams/charts with my class on Friday. Anyone got any ‘great’ ones I can share with them? I’m going to use this classic but on the look out for a few more crackers @ecrmaths.bsky.social @davegjones.bsky.social @coremathscat.bsky.social

What’s everyone’s experience of students managing their maths exercise books? Loose worksheets are a problem. We’ve tried gluing in but then it can get costly. We’re currently trialing hole punching books and using treasury tags but students struggle with the dexterity needed & organisation. Ideas?

In #MathsToday I asked some students if they knew where another student in their friendship group was, and they said "Oh, we can check on Life360, we have a group on there" and pulled out their phones.
Kind of wild that they basically have a Marauders Map where they can see where their friends are 😅

In #MathsToday it is my birthday (I've been around the sun 40 times!) and my #ALevelMaths students have created a secret message for me to decode using equations and graphs, and left it on my desk this morning 🥰

In #MathsToday one of my students told me that Cloudflare uses lava lamps to collect random data for its Internet encryption, and I think that is very cool 🤩 share.google/GC81XPzKa90g...
How do lava lamps help with Internet encryption?
The Cloudflare lava lamps are used for Internet encryption. Learn about entropy in cryptography and why randomness is essential for SSL encryption.

In #MathsToday my #ALevelMaths students were talking about how much they used to get from the tooth fairy. I said I got 50p. One of them had the audacity to muse, "Yeah, but that would be, like, £10 in today's money" 🤬
I made them Google inflation since the early 90s, and work it out 🤣 It's ~£1.34

Can you have an error interval in litres±m²? 🤔

This looks great! Thanks for sharing 😊
A friend of mine has just launched this website that I think is pretty great for generating quick starters for A-Level maths and he has started adding some questions for Further Maths too.

Just opened Bluesky to 28 notifications! Would never have happened for me on the other place. Love #Edusky
#MathsToday I was brought this question by someone I tutor. We got there in the end but my my was that complicated. Would love to know if there's an easier way! How would you do it?

A woman in Sainsbury's is trying to work out whether the larger or smaller box of cereal is better value (the small one is on offer), and the maths teacher in me is itching to go over and give her a lesson in best buys 🤣

There's a vent in my classroom that makes a spooky whistling/rattling noise when the wind blows a certain way. In #MathsToday we were doing modular arithmetic; I'd just explained that 2 x 3 = 1 (in mod 5) when the noises started. The students all looked up as though we had angered some spirits 🤣

Me in further #MathsToday:
"Colin Maclaurin was a child prodigy, who went to university at the age of 11 and was a professor by the age of 19... which does beg the question, what are you lot even doing with your lives?" 🤔🤣

Big change from Oxford University!

For 2027 entry onwards they will use the TMUA (October sitting) for maths and not the MAT.

I am off to update SUMS magazine for current Year 12 students 😂

What would you remove from the current Maths GCSE?

Anything you’d add?

In #MathsToday I was telling some of my students how I was in Australia when my GCSE results were released, so I had to arrange a time with my teacher to ring the school from a landline so that she could read the results out to me, and their look of horror at the antiquity of it was brilliant 🤣
