Year 13 FM using the key properties of determinants to derive the 2x2 case (and think about how that scales to 3x3 case).

This was always planned to follow yesterday's breakdown of Leibniz formula!

This has had some very strong reactions. Interesting how people haven't stopped to consider, or ask, the context in which this was delivered.

Year 13 FM unpacked the following Determinant definition today.

I didn't display the 3x3 case at first!

Can you solve it? The simple T-puzzle that fools everyone (at first!)

For Year 12 today...

Why is solving a sum-product problem equivalent to solving a quadratic?

Why does the 'ac method' (splitting the middle term) work?

First full (8 period) day after a year away from teaching. Felt great to be standing up in front of classes discussing maths again. I did the below with a mixed Year 7 class and to my surprise, when I asked at the end they all said they enjoyed it!

Amazing that Ofqual have allowed Pearson to bury their mistakes regarding A-Level Maths Paper 2. Approximately 70 000 students take this exam, most entries paid for with public money.

It doesn't address why there was a replacement for 99.9% of the cohort. It also doesn't address the issue of Paper 1 and the replacement Paper 2 being so similar. These seem reasonable things to want to know!

Out of respect for the students getting their results, I won't post anything tomorrow regarding the Pearson mess.

Official response from Pearson now grade boundaries have been set.

@alevelscandal.bsky.social not sure this really deals with points raised. Covers their back but Ofqual should have done more.

The striking anomaly of repeating 3 questions in Papers 1 and 2 and the consequent omission of multiple core topics that were tested in all previous years makes the Pearson Maths A Level distinctly different and therefore "not comparable" to previous years.

Pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed watching this. I'll be watching Q4 soon. I'd like to get more of this into my teaching, especially during extension classes.

From time to time I like to video myself solving maths problems in real time. Since the IMO has just happened, I plan to try a few of this year's questions. Here I get through Question 1. More to come at some point.
