with the end of the shutdown looming, here's my look for @wired.com into what life has been like for EPA employees over the past five weeks: little to no heads up about who was getting furloughed next, important projects getting put on the back burner while deregulation moves forward:
The EPA Is in Chaos
“We learn who is furloughed when we send an email to someone and get the out-of-office message,” one employee tells WIRED.

This! The extent to which people don’t actually enjoy thinking has been eye opening.
That’s before I reckon with the ethics of using a thing for ghost efficiency that is pretty societally devastating.

And on a final personal note, I don’t want to become stupid before my time. I really don’t. I will keep mucking about so that I can keep mucking about, for as long as possible.

The doc about this, Shut Up and Sing, is great. Heroes
people have completely memory holed this which is a shame because I don't know that I've seen anything like it before or since. Natalie Maines, performing in London, said she was ashamed that George W. Bush was from Texas, and in response she and her bandmates had their lives destroyed
In my second of two opinion writing seminars for MPP students today, I was asked about getting canceled in the future over writing today. I immediately responded with my deeply held belief that only The Chicks ever have been canceled. 3 of the 65 people laughed; everyone else was very confused.

It's touched on in here, but I've been avoiding food lines thinking, "Those should be reserved for people who really need it," while in the back of my mind trying to calculate when that will be us.

Every time I read one of these I want to quit my job and figure out how to always be working somewhere at my kids' school
When my first child started school, they told us to create an envelope for her that had a couple family photos & a simple message of comfort in the event of a shooter/lockdown.

It was very hard coming up with the words to write my 5yr old, knowing they might be the last I ever said to her.
"I don't really want to teach about how to escape active shooters at school"-an English teacher who started at $30K/year.

Lockdown drill for elementary aged kids. I can't believe this is what we've chosen. "The shooters have all been through these drills."

In Cree, Heinz new 'MayoChup' translates poorly
It comes in a squeeze bottle. Calgary Herald:The name seems pretty logical—though some would argue ketchonnaise would be better—but in certain Cree dialects it comes off as less than appealing. To…

Start a garden. In fucking October.
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

In about three years the entire university pivot to AI curricula and schools and programs is going to be so deeply embarrassing. We will all pretend it never happened and I will be standing there, looking at people with a mirror in my eyes. This is all so embarrassing.

Again, Mark Zuckerberg's kids go to a screen-free school with 14 students total and multiple specialized tutors
let me note that one of the actual tests here is going to be 'what do people pushing these ideas want for their own children' and I will bet you a lot of money that the answer is 'the elite university model of Harvard et al' not 'learning through AI slop'
Wow. Just wow.

"Students pay premium prices for information that AI now delivers instantly and for free. A business student can ask ChatGPT to explain supply chain optimization or generate market analysis in seconds. The traditional lecture-and-test model faces its Blockbuster moment."
