Against Journaling: Dennis Tang on the Joys of Not Writing It All Down
I remember being a small child, doing arithmetic at the kitchen table, but not what state I was in—Delaware, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, we moved all around. I remember the face of my middle school bul…

I'd hear constantly as a Vice editor that "digital" (the website and its editorial team) was one of the only unprofitable parts of the company. imagine my surprise that this was in part because PRIVATE JET TRANSPORT for execs was being written to our balance sheet www.theverge.com/24094310/vic...

"The logic of the judicial decision — if life begins at conception, embryos must be people — fails against the logic of Christian nationalism — that White people need to reproduce to avoid being replaced."
New, from me: it is amazing we have been told for years about the danger of identity politics, but that narrative excludes the most powerful identity politics shaping our politics and government.

Today's newsletter: I believe AI is racing Silicon Valley toward another dot com bust. Generative AI is too unreliable, has no path to profit, uses far too much energy, and cannot fix its core problem - that you just can't trust the things it creates.

There's this wild Lovecraftian horror to a grown adult talking about how great it'll be when AI can make full-length movies and books based on a few prompts, because you suddenly realize they've only ever seen shadows dancing on the cave wall for their whole life. Nothing has meant anything to them.

We fired the art department and replaced them with an orb. It hovers about four feet off the ground and follows us around the office. Sometimes it feels like it's waiting for something. Sometimes it follows you home. Jim says it told him to dig into the dirt. It will save the company twelve dollars.

Every two weeks a judge in a different state bangs a gavel, announces "it is the finding of this court that the accused, Donald Trump, is an absolute turbo shithead" and then fines him an amount roughly equal to a MLB team's entire payroll. This is expected to continue for months.

The way conservatives talk about and understand this issue is essentially imaginary, a problem that happens on their television screens. Trying to "solve" it in a way that assuages their concerns is like passing a law to try to outlaw the fake drugs from law and order svu
There is no amount of increasing border enforcement or deporting people that will ever make the American right wing believe the border is being properly handled by a democratic president. Any compromise on this is just a signal that they can demand more & keep the issue live. Immoral, bad politics.

Socrates was a classic poster. He just walked up to people and asked them what they believed in, then he’d say it was stupid and yell at them. He argued with everybody until he was legally compelled to kill himself. Not one of us has that commitment

Annual reminder that Thanksgiving has nothing to do with pilgrims and natives; it was instituted by President Lincoln in 1864 to celebrate Union victories, so if you really want to observe it properly you should burn a Confederate flag.
