I recently did a podcast for the Natural Rural Education Association on a law review I co-authored on the creation of "education preserves," which would protect rural school districts from voucher and charter school expansion.

In the rooms of AA they call 12/31 “amateur night.”

Stay safe if you’re drinking (get a ride, have a buddy).

Stay safe if you’re not drinking and want to stay stopped (drive yourself, have a buddy).

Good luck out there.

This is a key point. Charters are legislative creations. They are not inherently "good" or "bad." But they can be "bad" ehen desogned poorly.
It's not that "chartering" per se necessarily leads to this effect, but when you have largely unregulated, rapidly proliferating, low quality operators, while disinvesting in the system, don't expect good outcomes (system wide).

Thrilled by choice of Kamar Samuels for Schools Chancellor. Got to know him when he was Supt for D13 in BK (before D3 in Manh). An elem-school teacher & middle-school principal in the BX before that.

Smart, principled, effective.
Knows & loves what schools can do.

Interestingly, states that have tanked most are those that have continued to disinvest most in a race to the bottom (& with very larger voucher+charter sectors combined), and the ones that have been overtaken by Mississippi.

& some of these claims are simply objectively wrong. Some states, like Florida have continued to tank, while others have rebounded or leveled off. AND, the COVID drop was merely an extension of the drop that came before COVID (at least partly a lagged effect of post-recession disinvestment)

For most of its history SCOTUS has been fairly corrupt or otherwise partisan. It has done its best to ignore the clear meaning and intent of our most important constitutional provisions in order to serve partisanship and society’s powerful. More democratic influence on the SCOTUS should be welcomed.

The idea that the Supreme Court uses its independence to protect political minorities and uphold the Constitutional text is pretty ingrained in many people especially liberals. Even though it only did that for ~25 years of the 20th century and at best ~35 years of the 19th century.
The comments on this video on TikTok are so interesting to me because it is a lot of people saying that we can’t do this because what if Republicans try it to or what if Republicans reverse it. “We have to change the court the traditional way.”
